That's according to Thunder Levin, the Sharknado writer who confirmed on Twitter "We're back!" as the cult schlockfest movie gears up for a third outing.

Yes, the freak weather conditions resulting in an attack of man-eating sharks will be happening again as the hilariously bonkers global phenomenon is back for round three. Sharknado 3 will see Ian Ziering and Tara Reid reprise their roles as Fin and April, with the action shifting to Washington DC. Network SyFy said the story will feature "mass destruction in the nation's capital", and director Anthony C. Ferrante will yet again helm the production.

In what is turning out to be possibly the greatest movie franchise of all time, Sharknado is becoming an annual event for the TV network with the first two movies becoming a global phenomenon on airing. Sharknado 2: The Second One, which saw the cast battle freak weather in New York, hit 3.9 million viewers in the US, on its June premiere. Ratings aside, it scored more than 500,000 tweets, making it a social media phenomenon.

The original was a surprise hit for SyFy – it found fervent fanbase who embraced the shonky special effects, cheesy dialogue and tongue-in-cheek schlockiness. By the time the second one hit last year, there was long list of famous names lining up for cameos, including Kelly Osbourne, Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Wil Wheaton and more. The franchise has brought fresh life to the careers of Reid and Ziering, the latter in particular proving he can carry the lead action-hero role in spectacular fashion.
