From my memory, Earaserhead is a waking nightmare, it's the horror of the ordinary and banal, with a surreal atmosphere of dread and discomfort. The fear of the possible, the fear of the Freudian.

I don't think it's supposed to make any more sense than your average nightmare does.

I haven't watched it in years, I should watch it again.

It is a visually stunning movie which is somewhat difficult to do in black and white.

Mind you it held the attention of our cat (who usually ignores the TV) for the first half hour.

It's essentially David Lynch's impressionistic/dreamscape view of (his) life in Philadelphia. It captures the experience pretty well.

Been decades since I've seen it, but it used to be a pretty regular feature at the TLA Cinema in Philly in the late 70s/early 80s.

Lynch is entirely unpredictable. He made the largely incomprehensible Eraserhead, which became a cult favorite (often shown alongside the considerably better Liquid Sky). Then he made the stellar The Elephant Man. Then he made his wretched travesty of Dune. Etc. He goes from weird to brilliant to stinker, and there is no way to know what is coming next.
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

Dune wasn't that bad..

Twin Peaks was a masterpiece
