Bernie Gunther

Post by liberty »

Does any one else here like Bernie Gunther novels? That all, no agenda, I am just asking a question.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Apparently I am the only fan on this board. They are good stories, but not really realistic fiction. No one could have had the psychological damage and mouth he had and manage to stay alive in NAZI Germany. It was a place where one careless word could cause one to disappear and Tourette syndrome was a fatal condition.

BERNARD GUNTHER is a former soldier (he fought with the Wehrmacht on the Turkish Front in the first World War) and a ex-cop (an inspector for the Kriminalpolizei) now working as a private eye in the pre-World War II years of Berlin, specializing in the missing persons. Due to the rise of National Socialism, business is coming along nicely, thank you, even if Bernie doesn't seem to be making many friends with the powers that be. These books offer a harsh look at and a hard criticism of Nazism.

I've read several of the books, they were fine, but not spectacular, IMO. My Swede enjoys them and has read them all (which is why I read them in the first place).

I have been thinking about this; Phillip Kerr the author of Bernie Gunther must be a man of some courage: In his novel Beyond Silence he deals with Homosexuality in that some of his characters in that story are homosexual. Instead of using the word gay he uses the word queer. His word usage is technical correct the story is set in the early 1950s and the word gay as referring to homosexuals did not come into common usage until the 1970s. I am surprised there has not been a boycott launched against him denouncing him as a homophobe. I suspect the publishing industry is heavily liberal and that such a boycott could damage his income.
