John Hurt, the wiry English actor who played a drug addict in “Midnight Express,” Kane in “Alien,” the title character in “The Elephant Man,” and Winston Smith in “1984” has died, his publicist confirmed to Variety. He was 77.
Hurt had disclosed in 2015 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
I first saw him in The Elephant Man when I was very young - a brilliant performance, still among the best ever captured on film.
I hope the end was not too horrible for him.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

I was surprised by his age. I assumed he was in his 70s at least a decade ago.
A fine actor. RIP.

Nothing like a good roll on the dockside, eh Gob?
No, I agree with you - saw it on TV when it was first broadcast. First time I'd seen JH and he was brilliant. Great film.
Sorry that he won't be gracing the screens in new projects
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
the man has a lot of good movies/performances in his credits; the last thing I recall seeing him in was in the dystopian future film Snowpiercer (around a year of two ago, I think); it was a modest role, but he brought some class to the film. He will be missed.
