Dancing with the bigots

Post by Gob »

Mixed feelings over this.

While any and all bigots who bad mouth a transsexual person in whichever medium are scum, isn't there a huge bit of chutzpah here?

Chas Bono is a star for what? Being Cher's transgendered daughter/son.

So if s/he was not Cher’s sprog, would s/he get on the show? I think not.

So having taken advantage of some borrowed fame, you you’ve set yourself up in the public eye Chas.

If you didn’t know you’d catch flack for it, you are either very stupid or too cosseted.

Either way, it’s your choice to join the show, deal with it.

Cher has criticised the "stupid bigots" who have attacked the casting of her transgender son, Chaz Bono, on US show Dancing With The Stars.

The singer defended Bono, who underwent a female-to-male sex change last year, saying "it took guts" to participate in the celebrity ballroom dancing show.

"Chaz is being viciously attacked on blogs and messageboards about being on DWTS!" she said via her Twitter page.

She urged fans to pledge their support for Bono on other social media sites.

Cher wrote: "I support him no matter what he chooses to do. It took courage to do DWTS!"

She added that "mothers don't stop getting angry with stupid bigots" who hurt their children, but said she was sure the "vast majority of people will love Chaz" on the show.

Bono replied to the comments on his Twitter page saying: "Thanks for all your support mom. The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can."

Bono, 42, has been the target of online jokes and hate messages since Monday's announcement that he would be taking part in the new series of Dancing with the Stars, which begins on 19 September.

Some fans have said they will no longer watch the show - which is one of the most popular programmes in the US - while he is a contestant, while some conservative groups have called for a boycott.

Dan Gainor, of the Culture and Media Institute, called Bono's casting "a ridiculous, agenda-driven move" by the show's producers.

Actor David Arquette will also star in the new series of Dancing With Stars "This is the latest example of the networks trying to push a sexual agenda on American families," he said.

However, Dancing With The Stars' executive producer Conrad Green said viewers should watch the new series before passing judgment.

He added the show had no agenda other than entertainment and was seeking to represent a range of people.

"I hope that a lot of the people who appear to be upset at the moment will give him a chance and maybe realise it's not quite as bad as they think," he said, in an interview with AP.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation praised the casting of both Bono and gay TV stylist Carson Kressley on the show, calling it "a primetime first."

"Chaz Bono joining the cast of a series like Dancing with the Stars is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognise that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture," Herndon Graddick, senior director of programmes, said.

Why weren't conservatives outraged by the show's casting of unwed mother Bristol Palin?

Cher's offspring is just as qualified to be on the show, whether female or male, as Sarah Palin's offspring. Both are famous mostly for the maternal association.

Making no 'family values' argument against casting a teen mom, while being outraged at casting a transgendered person, is nothing but blatant bigotry.

All those conservative idiots are just pissed that they'll have to boycott a season of their favorite mindless drivel.

I'm tired of the "it worked for [the other party] argument" Have we got so jaded that the "Two wrongs don't make a right" doctrine means nothing? Is a Mea culpa too much to ask for? I know this is TV and no morals exist (for right or wrong, all hail lord Neilson)

Anyone think is we collectively stopped diving for the bottom we might just start plumbing untold depths?

Just felt like ranting.

I long ago gave up on network TV. (I Do miss "My Name is Earl" tho)

I don't watch this show unless it's off YouTube, about someone scandalous. Which is done at least once a season, to generate interest in the program.

It's how American Idol, another show I don't watch, used to dedicate a lot of airtime to the bad/talentless contestants, until the talented participants had generated enough of a fan following to keep the ratings high.

It's kinda the 'Freak Show' factor, and while I don't begrudge Chas anything about his transsex decision; it is the only reason he's called a 'star'. He made the biggest media tabloid splash for solely for that.

As to TV; I miss Daily Show & Colbert Report, and hate that Comedy Central's website is flash-based so I can't watch online, either.

The true outrage is that DWTS has cast Nancy Grace as a "star":

Not having ever seen her except behind her desk, I didn't realize she was so voluptuous.

Sadly, Sue, I think Nancy Grace is likely considered a star by the majority of the DWTS audience.

When you consider the people they get on these shows, you have to wonder why they don't call it 'Dancing With People Who Have Appeared On Telly At Some Point'.

No one is saying that it would have been ok to diss Bristol Palin's appearance on the show because she was a teen mom, so there's no "wrong" being perpetrated by [the other party]. Those who are complaining now about a trans contestant are being held to their own standard, nothing more. No one suggested that anyone should be following their example.
