Dexter

Post by dgs49 »

New season is starting on Showtime this Sunday. I think it's season 6.

For those of you who are not familiar with the series, Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter expert with the Miami Dade Police Department. He is also a psychopathic mass murderer who finds and kills other mass murderers (bad guys) as a public service. It is one of the most entertaining series on current television, and if you aren't familiar with it, I would strongly recomend that you buy or rent the CD set and watch seasons 1 through 5.

But I think I ought to prime you by letting you know a few things.

Dexter has no emotions. His traumatic witnessing as a child of the gory death of his mother pretty much sapped all the emotions out of him. His step-dad tried to teach him how to pretend to have emotions, but he never quite gets it right. OTOH, he is apparently able to do the old In&Out when the occasion calls for it, as he has a child by his now-deceased wife, from season 4.

Dexter does not require any sleep. He occasionally manages to look tired, and you will occasionally see him waking up, but he has shown a capability to pull 8 or 10 consecutive all-nighters without significant impairment of his faculties.

Dexter has infinite financial resources, and it is not clear where they originate. He has a house, a car, a nice boat, and spends a lot of money on knives and other killing supplies. He is never short of cash.

He apparently has only the occasional work assignment at the PD. He can go out searching for bad guys for days on end, and one never hears his boss or co-workers asking - as most people would who have his "work habits" - WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE PAST WEEK?????

Like most television and movie characters, he shows superhuman strength and fighting ability when the need arises, and he recovers from serious injuries in a matter of hours, not weeks, but that all fits into the "suspension of disbelief" category. His sister on the show, a detective in the same precinct (and his former wife in real life) is possibly the most entertaining figure on the show. She has a garbage mouth and a serious case of what Dave Barry used to call "Blitherer's Disease" - she says whatever comes to mind and doesn't care who is there to hear it or how it will be received.

Sunday night. Enjoy.

So, it's a graphic novel (comic book) done in live action?

I think it is a terrific show, very entertaining. I also agree that Dexter sister's Debra is one of the best characters you'll find on any show.

I disagree with dgs' simplification of Dexter's complex character. Dexter clearly has emotions, but allowing them to emerge is very dangerous -- not unlike a favorite Vulcan character. There have been plenty of episodes where Dexter is fatigued and makes mistakes, caused by his burning it at both ends of the candle. Indeed, much of the humor in the series is seeing how Dexter can balance his job duties with his extra curricular activities, and then add in his increasingly complex personal life. Dexter does appear to have adequate financial resources, but then he has lived a simple life and he is one of those outrageously compensated public employees ;) . And his father (a cop) did teach him how to fight, so it is not surprising that he can dispatch most any foe. Other than a plethora of mass murderers showing up in Miami, I don't think there are too many suspension of belief components to Dexter's character.

Indeed, for a character with psychological problems, he is more believable than any comparable tv character like Monk, House, Costanza, or Tony Randall (OCD cleaning), and many movie characters.
