Katy Perry has run out of the cute factor, so she decides to whore it up a bit to sell records. How original, no one's ever done that before.
In the wake of her divorce from UK comedian Russell Brand and a new emphasis on "dark" music, the chart-topping singer appears to be chasing an image makeover.
Trading smurf pop princess for burlesque beauty queen, Perry is hardly recognisable in a retro photo spread for the March edition of Interview magazine.
The Moulin Rouge-ish black and white photos feature the 27-year-old performer lounging off-stage in fishnet stockings, beaded dresses and sequin-studded lingerie.
Looking past the camera and surrounded by burlesque dancers in various states of undress, Perry's photo shoot has the intimate feel of a candid, albeit highly stylised, documentary.
Interviewed by comic actress Kristen Wiig, Perry foreshadowed her future musical direction: "My music is about to get real f***ing dark. I'll be shoe-gazing. You'll never see my face because my hair is in my face."
Her musical mood may have changed but her fans are as keen as ever. Perry's most recent single, the heartbreak disco anthem Part of Me, debuted at No 1 on the US Billboard charts.
