Ripping off books

Post by Gob »

Ok, as you may have read in the ipod thread, I'm very much enjoying having audio-books on the ipod. Most of these come from the library, currently it's "Adrian Mole and the weapons of Mass Destruction,*" by Sue Townsend which is giving me my aural pleasure. But something struck me this morning that I thought I'd share.

Borrowing music CD's from the library, and ripping them and saving them/burning them, is a big no no, agreed? But most people these days, listen to music on some sort of MP3 player, so is it illegal to rip and listen to them on for your ipod? Or, if you delete the music after the Library loan period has expired, is it then ok?

Also, as these books take up to 10 hrs to listen too, far more than the average 40 mins to an hour for music CD's, is there a difference there?

"Marigold and I quarrelled last night as to which of us has the most monstrous mother and only stopped when Marigold screamed, "You couldn't find my clitoris if you were led there by Sir Ranulph Fiennes". After she'd slammed out I consulted The Joy of Sex' and discovered that I'd probably been playing too much attention to relevantly unimportant bits of her genitalia whilst ignoring the clitoris, yet it had been staring me in the face for the last eighteen months. Glenn rang at 2 am from somewhere in Iraq to say that his standard issue army boots had melted in the desert heat and could I get Parcel Force to rush him some size ten Timberlands."

Look at it another way...

By ripping an audiobook that you will want to listen to again you are saving wear and tear on the library's valuable CDs. In other words you are helping your library. And consider this... The alternative is to borrow the CDs again. What if that second time you lost or damaged them? You would be denying other patrons the pleasure of listening to the book just because you were too damn selfish to rip them.

That would make you a heartless bastard!

Do you really want to be a heartless bastard?

I don't know. Is it?

It's not like buying, copying and returning them for your money back.

What are the damages?

It's the same as if you had borrowed them from a friend who had bought them and ripped copies for yourself, you're trying to get something for nothing.

I don't think burning this one would be good... but then again...

When I allegedly ripped/burned some music from a certain Ohio Libraries collection of CDs, I allegedly rationalized it this way.
(a) I am not going to buy this CD anyway
(b) I could trot along to the library and borrow it a zillion times and no one is hurt by that
(c) Therefore, to save gasoline, electrical usage at the library, the time and labour of librarians (a rare and precious breed) and so on, it was more effective for me to just keep the music at my house (allegedly)
(d) Except it was right to return the library's CD for the benefit of other patrons

I draw the line at ripping their DVDs though. They have that warning thing saying it's illegal to make copies (or indeed to show it to anyone ever at any time anywhere) and besides I don't have any DVD ripping s/w.

PS oh and I fully support the library through taxes and fines so I've actually helped pay for that CD anyway - it's mine!

I tried to rationalize an opposing argument but I couldn't.

Isn't borrowing something (anything) from the library--instead of buying it--"getting something for nothing"?

No, the powers that be have decided that a library is a public service and so have paid for it already.

So if I deleted it within the loan period, I will be a god boy. This is what I tend to do in any case.
