respect for the originator.Heavily built and massive, there was a suggestion of uncouth physical inertia in the figure, but above this unwieldy frame there was perched a head so masterful in its brow, so alert in its steel-grey, deep-set eyes, so firm in its lips, and so subtle in its play of expression, that after the first glance one forgot the gross body and remembered only the dominant mind.
This is the 19th century!

For the same reason that Mycroft should be;
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Its art. It should be allowed to flow and change. You can respect the original without being tied to every comma and every description.

I think Idris would make a terrific Bond, far better than Benedict.

Guin--but how far a field can you go and still claim to be an interpretation of the original? If I recall from the books, Mycroft's size (and lack of energy, possibly due to his size) was part of the reason that he did not do the same sort of work as his brother, even though his deductive powers might have been greater. Take that away, and you have another change/explanation to be made.Guinevere wrote:Its art. It should be allowed to flow and change. Clearly there is some sort of artistic license to allow for slightly different impressions, but eventually it becomes a derivative work--something inspired by the original but quite different from it.

Like that "Elementary" shite with an Asian female Watson?!?!?1 Set in modern day America?!?!?
I don't care if Lucy Liu is sex on two legs, it's just wrong!!

Re: This is the 19th century!
I've said that as well; call the characters anything but Watson and Homes and I probably would watch it. As it is, I have never seen it (despite a number of people telling me it's a good show). But changing of the original (while still riding on its coat tails) has been a pet peeve of mine; and this is something TV has done endlessly. It's usually a case of turning a fine porterhouse steak into a cheap hamburger, but sometimes it appears to be better than that.
Re: This is the 19th century!
geez, if they want something new, they could write something original of their own....
I never got the infatuation with Sherlock anyway. I read them all when I was a kid. it struck me as bologna then, as it does now....
a friggin' coke head is generally useless after the first few weeks indulgement anyway, then the addiction ruins the small moments of epiphany that the coke may provide.

Re: This is the 19th century!
But a Watson married to a professional Ninja Assassin (as is the case in the Cumberbatch-Freeman version) works just fine for you?Like that "Elementary" shite with an Asian female Watson?!?!?1 Set in modern day America?!?!?

Re: This is the 19th century!
I'll pass having not seen that series.

That's how the Patriots spied on the other teams' plays.

More like "007: License to Cheat".

I don't care much about football, I think it's a stupid game that causes unnecessary injury and long-term negative effects on the players . . . but I hate injustice and to see someone wrongfully accused.
Brady is innocent and it's really pathetic that people are such haters to someone who is clearly the best of the best in his profession.

BSG--I have nothing against Brady, but I can't stand their coach (Bellichik); the guy's a rotten loser and a bad winner, and I wouldn't put anything beyond him. Now, granted, he might be the nicest guy in the world in real life, but that's not what I see.
And Brady has always been one of his biggest defenders, so it's no wonder he is tarred with the same brush by many. But, to be fair, anyone even near the top is always attacked and accused unfairly, it goes with the territory.

Re: This is the 19th century!
Brady's no genius & lacks judgment in many things, like dumping the gorgeous & talented Bridget Moynahan and championing that quack doctor Alex Guerrero - and defending Bellichik, who IS an asshole with questionable ethics, I agree.
But as we chanted at Fenway this summer, 'Brady is innocent!' - people need to quit picking on him!

But if they must, let's hope it's a Pick-Six

Two interceptions all season, only the first leading to points - but they won the game anyway. Sunday's second INT resulted in a 3 and out for the DC Native Americans.
