What is this hostility that some liberals seem to have toward country music. I remember when Von Jovi released a hit country song ; he was as much as accused of being a traitor by the red haired liberal on the View. I can understand not fancying a type of music. I don’t like rap. But I wouldn’t say I hate it even though it does cause harm to our society with its message hate and violence and rape.
What is it with your need to read statements -- of those you like to classify as liberals -- things that are not there and never were there.

I've said nothing here about whether I listen to country music or not. I've certainly not said anything hostile towards country music. You have zero facts at all about my opinion on country music. So please, stop making shit up.

....or any more liberal than rube! ;)

(ETA: yeah, yeah, I know, there are several of us here who are probably to the left of rubato politically...I just couldn't resist...)

If I remember correctly, Strop once said that he thought John Prine was a "Country Western Singer"...

Like his views on The Godfather, this is one of those things one must take with a grain of salt.... :P

I cannot remember saying that, and who the fuck is John prime in any case?

Well, in that case I apologize...

I must have confused you with someone else who didn't know much about country music.... 8-)

John Prine:

And this one, that I've used as a lullaby to sing both of my children to sleep...(the lyrics may not be lullaby type stuff, but the tonality is very soothing and melodious....)

No video, but it's the best audio I could find:

Christmas In Prison

ETA:

Here are the lyrics to Christmas In Prison (Eat your heart out Leonard Cohen...)
It was christmas in prison
And the food was real good
We had turkey and pistols
Carved out of wood
And I dream of her always
Even when I dont dream
Her names on my tongue
And her blood's in my stream.

Wait awhile eternity
Old mother natures got nothing on me
Come to me
Run to me
Come to me, now
Were rolling
My sweetheart
Were flowing
By god...

She reminds me of a chess game
With someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain
After a prairie fire
Her heart is as big
As this whole goddamn jail
And shes sweeter than saccharine
At a drug store sale.

Wait awhile eternity
Old mother natures got nothing on me
Come to me
Run to me
Come to me, now
Were rolling
My sweetheart
Were flowing
By god...

The search light in the big yard
Swings round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes
Like the dust in the sun
Its christmas in prison
Therell be music tonight
Ill probably get homesick
I love you. goodnight.

Don't let that southern drawl mislead you, Gob. John Prine is a true American original, and hard to categorize--except that he's one of the best singer-songwriters anywhere. Eat your heart out Leonard Cohen...INDEED! (And I actually like Leonard Cohen--as a songwriter, not so much as a singer...)

This one's for dgs:

Here's one of my personal favorites, got me through a bad bout of depression:
(and here's Prine telling the story behind that song, in another video)

...and just for fun...

...and here are a couple for dales:

 (....sorry, I guess I kinda got carried away there....)

Don’t be so sensitive I was not talking about you per say, but liberals in general . And specifically Joy bayhar, I believe that is her name, on the TV show “The View”. She appears to have a very condescending view of country music fans and their punishment of the Dixie Chicks for treason (social treason).
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Lib, if you don't want someone to take a comment as being directed at them, you probably shouldn't quote them in the same post, right before you make the comment....or if you do, you should make the fact that it's not directed at them clear at the time you make the comment; otherwise it's a reasonable inference for a person to make, even if it wasn't your intention...

Just sayin'.... ;)

Thanks Jim I will try to take that in to consideration next time.

Okay, now you've got me started...

One of the greatest love-lost songs of all time...

"Well you know, she still laughs with me; but she waits just a second too long..."

My Mexican home...

This is probably my personal all time favorite Prine song, (Well, except for Sweet Revenge, of course... 8-))

It conveys a really good "coping skill" message...almost Biblical quality in its poignancy;

"a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter.
You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there
wrapped up in a trap of your very own
chain of sorrow."
*

*Leonard Cohen on his best day, never wrote a line half as good as that... :P

I'm no liberal but I have always appreciated country (and western) music, having grown up on Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Charley Pride, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard and Tammy Wynette to name just a few. There are certainly "liberal" country stars as well as "conservative" ones, and plenty more who just write/sing a good tune without regard to politics.

It's worth noting that country music has addressed current social issues far more regularly and more prominently than pop/rock music ever did, taking on divorce, birth control, women's rights, poverty, race and political corruption. Country music has always seemed to me more in touch with and relevant to people's actual lives and feelings.

When John Prine emerged he was likened to Bob Dylan. They clearly are different types. One of the best concerts I've been to was a John Prine and John Hiatt twin bill.

No one has posted perhaps his best songs, young and older:

Sam Stone:

Lake Marie:
