Yep... the old folks... you NEVER can tell. This guy is my age. He didn't have this kind of energy when I saw him at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr oh-so-many years ago.

I've got a fairly good 2nd-hand CB radio and antenna I can sell you, as long as you've crawled back to the 1970s.
You and ol' wes there — a/k/a 'CB Savage' — can do beaver checks and smokey reports and all that good stuff together.
So waddaya say? Can I get a big 10-4 on that?

Next time I see them, I'm gonna ask them to play a Todd Rundgren tune (haven't decided which one yet -- probably I Saw The Light, but maybe Hello It's Me or Can We till Be Friends).
Yeah, I always liked that song, too, but I like the Yo La Tengo cover better than the original. YLT is a lot of fun when they're doing covers, especially live. They do a call-in show every year as a fund-raiser at WFMU, where they take requests from the radio audience. It was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys, who recorded and released it as a cut on their 1964 album "All Summer Long". The Hondells immediately covered it, releasing it as a single which peaked at #9 on the Billboard charts. The Beach Boys did go on to release their version of the song as a single but it didn't even crack the Billboard top 50, stalling out at #65.
The other famous "surf group" of the '60s, Jan & Dean (William 'Jan' Murray and Dean Torrence), also covered it on one of their albums the following year (1965).

We watched 'Little White Lies' last night on Amazon Prime. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/caryn-jam ... 23524.html It's a sort of French version of 'The Big Chill' and subtitled - funny in parts and very French. The music was good and I think all American if memory serves.
Towards the end there was a 'My Way' which I had not heard before and I really think of it only as a Sinatra song and so my take on it is colored by what I think of Sinatra which isn't much. The song is so associated with him that it's difficult to separate from his persona. But I couldn't tell from the voice who it was and I have to say I was struck by the quality of the song itself. I had to wait to the end to see that it was (and of course I am mortified that I didn't spot this for myself) by Nina Simone who made sure that every song she ever sang, stayed sung.

AN APPRECIATION: The Power of Music and Total Recall
A few nights ago I listened to an old, unlabeled, CD mash-up I created maybe 25 years ago. To my surprise the standout track was Chris Rea's "Road To Hell." Instantly it transported me back to one night where me and my wonderful friend-with-benefits, Dana, were lying on the sofa and Rea's music played on a music video TV program. Both being troubled, confused, and restless, we kind of adopted it as "our own."
Dana and I were together a few times a week, especially after she knew Mary, my ex, had left for good. I was always so awkward, she was so beautiful, yet she put up with my hangups and insecurities and helped me make sense of what I was going through.
As time marched on, Dana later moved to NYC to attend AMDA where I saw her off and on for about a year or so, but then she got involved with other things. We only had occasional phone contact after that. The last I heard from her, she was back in the area and mentioned she had been in a scary car accident on the Roosevelt Expressway where she almost went flying off one of the twin bridges.
Anyway, I thought it might be nice to contact her and say 'hi', maybe on Facebook, but she wasn't there. I then googled her name and... BAM! It turns out that over three years ago she apparently committed suicide. I am still devastated and stunned. I never heard a word about it.
We used to talk about her "demons" -- she also had cut herself a few times -- but I surely thought she worked through the troubles with counselling and moved on. Sadly, it's now so obvious that she was shrouded in more darkness than she ever let on. She was always seeking yet, never finding.
Dana was a beautiful person in all the best ways, and a sassy smartass, a quality which I appreciated the most. A stunningly beautiful being -- warm and smart in every way. And now she is gone, forever, sadly at her own hand. And life goes on -- I really wasn't missing her a lot until I found this out, and now I am stunned and saddened. If only she got a "do over" -- she could be celebrating 46 years of life on 11/2. Dana, I hardly knew ye. I'll miss her often. Suicide... it fucks everybody up.
