Actually black powder and the smokeless powder in cartridges are 2 different beasts, but still smokeless powder was available in 1884 before the widespread use of electricity.

Why no steam engines, of any sort? They are towing cars with horses. No bicycles? Were they banned along with the guns?

I'm sorry I should have separated the comment about "towing cars" from the comment about there being "no bicycles".

Although I guess if one wanted they could tow a car with a bike/bikes...
