While I was up at my mother's last week I caught the latest episode of America's Got Talent. I know, I know, I don't normally bother with the reality talent shows either, but this girl caught my attention.

Her name is Jackie Evancho, she is 10 years old, yet her voice is so well developed and mature that you might swear she is lip synching. I love Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem, the Pie Jesu is my favourite piece from it, I have cringed over the years as I have heard people who thought they could sing absolutely murder it. Webber wrote the Requiem as a vehicle for his then wife, Sarah Brightman. I have heard her sing it on the recording and I have heard her do it live; this girl is better.

Not sure if this prdigy will have a successful Vegas career (the winner gets a $1 million Las Vegas contract), but she sure as hell will be a successful something.

She's already got a career. Offers from the Met or some such. My money is on Michael Grimm but I think Prince Poppycock has a shot.

Oh and it irritates me that her folks are having her hair dyed. She's too young for that kind of crap.

(At least from watching her videos on youtube it looks like they are dyeing her hair.)

I just hope she's being trained and ciached properly; the voice can easily be overstressed by children to mimic adults, and many a "child prodigy" has more or less lost their voice by the time they are in their twenties due to bad coaching.

Or like Charlotte Church, they become media whores..

Her remarks about her visit to New York in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks, saying "People over-dramatise and lose perspective" proved highly offensive.

Great voices, like great instrumental talent, don't always go to people with a great ear for music. Witness Celine Dion.
