Lauren Bacall RIP

US film and stage actress Lauren Bacall has died at the age of 89.
Her Hollywood career spanned seven decades, with a memorable debut aged 19 opposite her future husband, Humphrey Bogart, in To Have and Have Not.
More than 50 years later, The Mirror Has Two Faces earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1924, she went on to become one of cinema's biggest stars, best known for her husky voice and beauty.
A Twitter account of the Bogart estate, run by Bacall's son, tweeted: "With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall."
She reportedly died after suffering a major stroke at home.
Bogart was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2009 in recognition of "her central place in the golden age of motion pictures".

All actors are hyped by their agents as a "class act." And, of course, that's what they do... act. The "classier" actors merely guard their indiscretions, affairs, and peccadilloes more closely to the vest.
Class? Bogie, at age 46, quickly divorced his third wife to marry Bacall, age 21. Of the two, whose act was classier? I'm betting it was Bacall and "the look" in the bedroom that made her somewhat classy. I'm also betting "Little Bogie" had no conscience, with much less class.
Ah, only in Hollywood, where exploitative use and abuse is termed a class act.

Lauren Bacall was a smoldering, sensual, screen presence back in the late forties...
But no one would mistake her at that time for being an actress with the abilities of say, Ingrid Bergman....
But as she matured as an actress, she demonstrated real ability...not in film so much as on the stage...
She won two Tonys...
You can't be a talentless Ingenue and achieve that...

I'm just pointing out she had to "sleep her way to the top" in order to properly showcase her award winning acting ability. Hardly the Judeo-Christian family values needed to be a truly classy person. Lets pray she repented for her immorality and transgressions before she met her maker.

No, I refuse to. She did nothing wicked and evil in her life as far as I can tell. She had sex... might have even had it to further her career. So what?
You might want to try directing your "prayers" to the truly wicked of this world. Like Vladimir Putin or those assholes in ISIS or the Israeli Defence Force who bombed schools in Gaza.

But given that all humans are equally sinful, Ms. B is neither better nor worse than any of us. So Ray's argument based on "classier" criteria fails anyway

We're all sinners. Some of us more than others. One person's sin is another person's virtue. It all depends on who is doing the judging.
There are a lot of judges out there too and they're all sinners.
Let he who is without sin tell us how he managed that.

To be honest Meade, me being one of those atheist types that is less trusted than a rapist, I'm not a believer in original sin.
For my money the belief in better things in the afterlife leads to people being worse in the name of god in this life. If humanity knew for certain that this was our "one time, once chance" we'd be a whole lot nicer to each other.

Daisy, Meade isn't really talking about original sin here. Take the religion out of it and you just get the other truism "nobody's perfect".
As to the better things in the next life argument. I find that asshole will always find a reason to justify thier actions one convienent excuse is just as good as another

Atheism is one of the central tenants of communist ideology, but communism is not one of the central tenants of Atheist ideology.
If you believe that non-belief in God would somehow create a more humane society, one should expect societies built on a principle embracing Atheism would be more humane than other societies...
Of course the historical record is quite the opposite; communist countries have ranked among the least humane and the most brutal, cruel, and dehumanizing societies in human history.
If there's something about Atheism that is supposed to make people inherently "nicer", (which is what I take your central thesis to be) shouldn't the opposite have been the case?
And if that argument doesn't persuade you that people becoming Atheists doesn't do anything to make them nicer, here's another one:
Rubato is an Atheist...

Dais, I'd trust you before I'd trust a rapist - not sure how I'd know that person was one but..... Yes I wasn't referring to the doctrine of original sin. You might take sin as an offence against another human, or sentient being or nature or whatever. I think it's an offence against God - which actually encompasses all those. But that's another thread (please not!).
On your third sentence, I'd say there's no evidence that could/would happen - I'd argue that "once around" creates an incentive to actuate selfishness. If this is it, why care a jot about what comes after I'm dead? Grab the most now and who cares who gets hurt?
On the second, the belief in better things in the afterlife is conditioned upon the present actions - it is not "do what thou will because it doesn't make any difference." I think that's some other religion than Christianity.
Granted, if people have a false idea (such as 'compel them to come in' which was popular in the Roman church for a time) about what God has said - or if they have a false god - then they run around doing all kinds of crimes, even though those same crimes are in fact condemned by God (and even their god).
I doubt that Ms B was any worse than RayThom or myself - may even have been better, regardless of religion or lack thereof
