Otto Schimmelpenninck, bassist for the metal band Delain, has spoken out about a recent incident where he ruptured his left testicle on stage, but continued on to finish the gig.

Delain were playing in Birmingham when Schimmelpenninck was hit in the groin by a streamer cannon.

Explaining the details of the incident in a lengthy Facebook post, the bassist went on to say that an extra member performing with them caused his usual stage placement to be out of line, leading to the incident.

“In my enthusiasm I did not pay attention, and happened to be VERY close when the streamer fired. It hit me from the back, in my genitals. Although pain was pretty bad right away, I was merely pissed off at myself for not paying attention,” the bassist stated. “During the next song, pain got worse though, and I had the feeling I was bleeding. Pretty soon pain got to the point where I could barely stay conscious anymore, but for some reason I did manage to finish the show.”

Schimmelpenninck then went on to describe how he was taken to hospital following the gig and how his “scrotum was the size of a grapefruit”. “More than 500ml of blood was removed from my scrotum and my testicle stitched up. I stayed in hospital for the rest of day and night, and was discharged on Friday afternoon,” he added.

He concluded by saying that he came “very close to losing [his] left testicle” but is on the mend and hoping to be well enough to join the band’s forthcoming European tour with Sabaton.

Delain are a symphonic metal band from Holland who formed in 2002 and take their name from the Stephen King book The Eyes Of The Dragon. They’ve released four studio albums including this year’s ‘The Human Contradiction’.

I think I can safely say, speaking for all the chaps, that it's difficult to get the usual placement with an extra member in there

 @ Meade

As to the OP; holy crap! Hard to imagine someone working through that level of pain. Wonder if any pre-stage pharmaceuticals were responsible?
