If you've not seen it, give it a try

I'm probably two years late and more than a dollar short but Netflix is turning out to be a goldmine (for Margaretta and me). Instead of suffering rotten current TV drama series, there are those such as The Killing just waiting to be discovered - and with no commercials.

I haven't seen any USian police series that approached the standards of those found on British TV until this one popped up on the radar. But of course, it was heavily influenced by Danes which explains the setting in Seattle... once in a while I scream, "Turn on the bloody lights!" but they don't.
The Killing is an American crime drama television series that premiered on April 3, 2011, on AMC, based on the Danish television series Forbrydelsen (literally The Crime). The American version was developed by Veena Sud and produced by Fox Television Studios and Fuse Entertainment. Set in Seattle, Washington, the series follows the various murder investigations by homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman).

Thanks, we are doing the same re Netflix. The Fall and Top of the Lake, previously given thumbs up by several here, are presented as similar series, both of those BBC made.

Meade - try The Wire - one of the best ever.

I loved Top of the Lake and Broadchurch!

I think we started The Wire once and gave up on it... or maybe that was something like Blood on the Wire? Anyway, it had to do with a policeman being tied up naked on a chair with no seat, above a sharpened steel cone studded with razor blades and barbed wire. The idea was he could hold himself up for hours - just not enough hours. Maybe that wasn't The Wire?

I've got Broadchurch loaded up and watched a little of the first - decided to save it for Margaretta to watch with me - looks good. Top of the Lake I don't think I've heard of. The Fall either. (Yes, yes - bad English; who cares?)

You're thinking of Wire in the Blood, which is one of my favorite British procedurals but definitely a bit gruesome at times.

Glad you are enjoying The Killing - I thought it was very good, although at times painfully slow.

The Fall is excellent; I can't wait for the second series.

As BSG said, "Wire in the Blood" and "The Wire" are two different series. The Wire is an HBO series and is often mentioned as one of the few best series ever made and is a great crime/police series, with great writing and a deep and talented ensemble cast. Wire in the Blood is a BBC series and is good, but like BSG said, can get graphic, which makes sense as the hero is an expert in analyzing the minds of the most wicked criminals.
