Game Of Thrones...

We didn't start watching Games Of Thrones till about three weeks ago...

(And then we started binge watching it On Demand...and we've caught up to the middle of Season 3...another week and we'll be up to Season Five...)

It's like watching a Chess Game with 5 Different Teams Playing... a five-sided chess match...

I can understand why it has an unprecedented 9.5 IMDB...

ETA:

The actor's name is Peter Hayden Dinklage, and he was born in Morristown New Jersey...

I was surprised to learn that he wasn't a British actor, because his accent is impeccable...

What a big (here come the puns) opportunity for a little fellow to play such a juicy central role in a show of this quality:

Image

It's not like there are a whole lot of huge roles for dwarfs in Hollywood...

He'd never be tapped to be a Leading Man...

To be cast in a role like this (as opposed to the leader of The Lollipop Guild in a Wizard Of Oz remake) must have been the opportunity of a lifetime....

He's not just a curiosity; his character is unquestionably the best in the show...

Probably less T&A in that than the actual show.

I thought Dinklage's character was best in 1 & 2 but series 3 seemed to .... well, we were short-changed. He did a magnificent job but the part wasn't as well-written, IMO. He became less original (Tyrian) and more a cartoon. Obviously I'll have to watch it all again from the start just to make 3 etc worth catching up on. I think CP's about right.

We're getting ready to watch Episode 5 of Season 3...

The description for the episode in Comcast ends with "Robb is betrayed."...

What, again?

That poor dude (I would have said "that poor bastard", but that would be his brother...) can't turn around without being betrayed... 8-)

I lost HBO when I trimmed back my cable package a few months back, so I'm going to have to find some other way of watching it from now on. There are definitely points where I found it too gruesome to watch (I think you're just about at a series of episodes where I had to fast forward thru some of the scenes), but part of the appeal is just when you think they couldn't possibly push the envelope any further, they spring something more unexpected and off the wall than anything that came before.

And you'll see that play itself out again soon enough...

SPOILER ALERT.....

My favorite line, from Tyrion Lannister to Jofferey:

"We have had vicious kings, and we have had idiot kings, but you are the first vicious -idiot king we have ever had..."
"You are threatening The King!"

No, I am not...

"I am educating my nephew..."

Game of Thrones set ratings records when the first episode of the new season premiered last week but, in news somewhat less exciting for broadcaster HBO, it set records for piracy as well.

Media intelligence firm TruOptik recorded more than 13 million downloads of the first episode, reports BitTorrent news blog Torrent Freak, far exceeding the 8 million watermark set by last season's finale.

Taken together, the first four episodes of season five (which were leaked online ahead of the show's premiere) and the behind-the-scenes A Day in the Life feature were downloaded 32 million times, according to TruOptik's data.

While the majority of downloads were by users in the United States, the data shows Australia has the most Game of Thrones downloaders per capita.

Australia also has the highest ratio of pirates to non-pirates among Game of Thrones viewers in the world. Of all Australian viewers during the first three days of the new season's availability, 32 per cent were pirates. The rate in the US was 8 per cent. It's likely the rift is even bigger in reality, given the increasing use of VPNs in Australia to hide the true origin of web traffic.

If comment sections, blog posts, social media and general scuttlebutt is to be believed, the cause of the comparatively high rate of piracy here is down to access and availability.

In the US, viewers with a HBO cable subscription can watch Game of Thrones as it is broadcast live, or through the web on demand with the HBO Go service. The show can also be viewed on HBO Now, a new service that gives those without a cable subscription access to HBO content for $US14.99 ($19.37) a month.

HBO recently announced it will be cutting off Go subscribers using geo-dodging methods to access the service from outside the US. This means Australians determined to watch the show as it airs or shortly thereafter must do so with a full Foxtel subscription (which costs at least $660 for 12 months in HD plus $200 for installation), the Foxtel Play streaming service (currently $90 for the first three months, including HBO content) or pirating through BitTorrent.

While Foxtel Play is the least expensive way to watch the show in Australia besides piracy, many (including presumably that 32 per cent of viewers plus those using a VPN) have expressed a strong distaste for the service. Chief among the complaints is that the service streams in a lower quality (standard definition only and at a reportedly spotty bit rate) compared to full Foxtel and most US services. Many consumers also reject Foxtel's insistence on "bundling", arguing they shouldn't be made to pay for a whole raft of content they'll never watch when they only want HBO.

Of course there may be many others, in Australia and elsewhere, who would pirate the show no matter how low the price of the sanctioned version.

Once a thief, always a thief, or so it appears in Oz.

Take the quiz

So much for my dreams of ruling Westeros:
You would last only A Couple of Months in Game of Thrones. The brutality of Westeros and Essos is palpable. Only the strong can survive and you certainly have proven yourself capable of defending yourself; however, the land is rife with hedge knights, sellswords, men-at-arms, and combat trained lords. All of whom want to take you by the hair and slice or neck so deep that white of bone is visible for all to see.
