rubato wrote: Segovia is famous in a very small fragment of one small part of the whole. And even then only for a short time. All of the legion of masters who came a few years before modern recording techniques have been lost while his good fortune in timing has exaggerated his importance to people who, like yourself, think the world didn't exist until you heard about it.

yrs,
rubato
You make a very good point Rubato. If musicians like Sychra, Carulli or Paganini had been around at the right time to leave us some recordings maybe Segovia's given place in the annals of classical guitar would be more realistic. Even his true legacy, that of helping to popularise classical guitar would have been quite impossible without the talent of composers like Rodrigo...who it might well be said was just as (if not more) influential due to his compositions for guitar. Many people would look at you blankly if you mentioned the Concierto de Aranjuez but would still be able to hum along with it.

Now THAT's a legacy. :ok

Almost put this in 'Songs that make you cry' but the courage and hope it conveys, leaves me moved, but not saddened.

OK, how the FUCK did this song get put in a PG-rated movie?!?!
Well this car is automatic, it's systematic, it's hydromatic
Why it's greased lightnin'! (Greased lightnin'...)

We'll get some overhead lifters, and four barrel quads, oh yeah
(Keep talkin', whoah keep talkin')
Fuel injection cut off, and chrome plated rods, oh yeah
(I'll get the money, I'll kill to get the money)
With a four-speed on the floor, they'll be waitin' at the door
You know that ain't shit when we'll be gettin' lots of tit in greased lightnin'

Chorus:
Go, greased lightnin', you're burnin' up the quarter mile
Greased lightnin', go greased lightnin'
Go, greased lightnin', you're coastin' through the heat lap trials
Greased lightnin', go greased lightnin'
You are supreme, the chicks'll cream for greased lightnin'

We'll get some purple French tail lights and thirty-inch fins, oh yeah
A palomino dashboard and duel rocket twins, oh yeah
With new pistons, plugs, and shocks, I can get off my rocks
You know that I ain't braggin', she's a real pussy wagon - greased lightnin'

chorus repeats 2x

No, those are the lyrics from the movie...the TV version has what amounts to a completely different song.

My wife was in the drama club in HS and they did Grease...I never realized just how much they had to tone down that song. (Offhand, I recall the last line in the second verse was "You know that I ain't braggin', she's a real chick magnet- greased lightnin' .")

Yes I know, I meant that the original stage lyrics were much worse.

Hang on... I'll try to find them...

Never heard those...though I did have the soundtrack on vinyl at one time.

And I recently heard a disco remake of Summer Nights, which was WEIRD. Not bad, but weird.

Hehe... the original lyrics never even made it to Broadway!

Which is probably why I'm having a bugger of a time finding them...

I thought the Broadway show used the same lyrics as the movie, at least for Greased Lightnin'. I know several songs were changed for the movie. (And originally, Danny didn't sing that song...Travolta got that changed.)

They did use the same lyrics for Broadway and the movie... both used the 'sanitised' version.
