Actor Omar Sharif, best known for his roles in classic films Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has died aged 83.
Egypt-born Sharif won two Golden Globe awards and an Oscar nomination for his role as Sherif Ali in David Lean's 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia.
He won a further Golden Globe three years later for Doctor Zhivago.
Earlier this year, his agent confirmed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
His agent Steve Kenis said: "He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo."
Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, who appeared with Sharif in 1999 film The 13th Warrior, remembered him on Twitter as "one of the best".
"He was a great storyteller, a loyal friend and a wise spirit."
Another one I thought went years ago....

...and a great hand at Bridge.
Truly, for some men nothing is written unless THEY write it.

In the tribute I saw yesterday morning, it was mentioned that the first night after they arrived for filming Lawrence Of Arabia, Sharif and O'Toole were out together partying so hard that they managed to get arrested...
Now that's a "wish I had a time machine" moment...
How great would it have been to have gone out carousing with those with those two?
One of my favorite movies is another lesser known O'Toole/Sharif vehicle called Night Of The Generals:

One thing I recall about Sharif was an interview on a talk show (Dick Cavett I think) where he was talking about gambling and said "If you only gamble money you can afford to lose it's not gambling. Gambling is risking everything". He then told a story about how he had almost lost "everything" in Monte Carlo (Craps I think) and was walking away from the table. One of the others who had done well during his rolls gave him a stock tip and he invested the rest of his money the next day and made a handsome profit, only to almost lose everything again at the tables a few moths after.
Carousing with him and O'Toole would have been great.
