Danny Boyle has confirmed plans for a Trainspotting sequel, set for release next year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original film.



Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting was Boyle’s first major hit following 1994’s Shallow Grave, and helped catapult Ewan McGregor to stardom. It also featured Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner and Jonny Lee Miller and often appears in charts of the best British films.

“All the four main actors want to come back and do it,” said Boyle. “Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”

McGregor has previously confirmed he would like to return as his character, Renton. Miller plays Sherlock Holmes in Elementary and Carlyle is a regular on Once Upon A Time.c

Two years ago, Boyle revealed that John Hodge, who wrote the original script, was working on a followup based in Welsh’s 2002 sequel Porno.

Boyle’s new movie, about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has premiered to positive reviews at Telluride and looks set to be a major Oscar contender. It shares with Trainspotting a memorable scene involving a lavatory, when Jobs is seen rinsing his feet in one before the launch of the Mac in 1984. Speaking on Sunday, Boyle said: “British films always have to have at least one scene in a toilet.”

Porno is a novel published in 2002 by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, and is the sequel to Trainspotting.

The book describes the characters of Trainspotting ten years after the events of the earlier book, as their paths cross again, this time with the pornography business as the backdrop rather than heroin use (although numerous drugs, particularly cocaine are mentioned throughout). A number of characters from Glue make an appearance as well.

This sequel picks up ideas of the film adaptation of Trainspotting. One example is the fact that "Spud" has received his share of the drug money, which is shown in the film, but only alluded to in the book.
