DAVID Bowie has died after an 18 month battle with cancer.
The 69-year-old’s rep confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday afternoon, with statements also being released on the singer’s website and social media pages.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,” read the statement. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
The “Modern Love” singer leaves behind his supermodel wife Iman and two children.
His oldest son, 44-year-old director and screenwriter Duncan Jones, also confirmed the news on Twitter.
“Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all,” he posted along with a black and white photo of his father holding him as a child.
This is sad; one of the best concerts I went to was his in Radio City, shortly after the release of Space Oddity. I've been to a lot of other concerts, but this is one of the ones I enjoyed most; he was a consummate showman. RIP.

I really liked David (Jones) Bowie's music. RIP.
I was flipping channels saturday night and stopped at a station that was showing his videos and saw the new one for his album he just released friday (also his birthday IIRC). Wierd but typical Bowie.
He will be missed.

Sadly, whenever Bowie was caught "off camera" he always had a cigarette stuffed in his face. Another life cut short by a horrible addiction. RIP, DB.

Well, that's terrible news to start off the week. He was at one time my favorite rock star and always had a big following in Philadelphia. I think I saw Bowie on every tour that came through Philly between 1974 and 1990, sometimes two shows. I missed the Tower Theater show where he recorded David Live, but he came back later that year and then always played at the late and unlamented Spectrum. His Sound + Vision tour was the last arena show I ever went to, years after I had sworn off arena shows, but I'm still glad I went. Oh hey, there's a Youtube clip from that very concert:
It was the only Bowie show I ever saw where the sound was actually terrible, 'cuz when the Spectrum sucked it totally sucked ass, but (as you can see) the fans didn't really care. The best Bowie show I ever saw was the Serious Moonlight tour: we had tenth-row seats and a dozen hits of windowpane.

I loved his music, and of course he became an icon all over again in the 80s when I was heading to college. I wore out some of my Bowie tapes back then. He spoke to so many -- and especially to the slightly strange, off key, non-conformist in all of us.

I'm sorry that another bit of "our" generation has passed. Yikes - his son is 44 years old! He was an interesting man and too young. Never bought any of his music though. Not even 'Space Oddity' which was a cool song in the day and very different from other 1969 offerings.

yeah tpfk2w, when I a teen I thought bowie was just strange, I never really listened, guys didn t wear make up around here then... kinda like KISS , I thought they were just stupid with one or two good songs
then as a young man I listened.
...turns out bowie was a genius. listen and watch the song I posted if you aren t familiar...
I didn t realize that johnny cash and old hank and willie and Waylon and the boys were geniuses til I matured a bit. I just knew that I couldn t stand George jones....
did bowie ever grace the cover of Rolling Stone?

They've been playing Bowie on the radio all day long, and I've heard a lot while running errands with the nieces all over Highland and Poughkeepsie today.
On the way back from picking up dinner in PK just now, Starman came on the radio just as I started over the Mid-Hudson Bridge, which is lit in rainbow colors. I couldn't help smiling; how much did Bowie change the world? Quite a bit, I think.

it is no longer available to play here, and I could not find it anywhere on youtube either, tho it was there when I posted it.
yes, that is a most pleasant version. I watched it this morning while trying, unsuccessfully, to find the first version I posted

I know that's his most famous song, and his "masterpiece", etc., etc....but for some reason I can't quite put my finger on I've never liked "A Space Oddity" at all. Fortunately, there are plenty of other great David Bowie songs out there that I do love...like this one:

whoever controls his estate must hate that version... or want money to use it...
I saw a clip of it on CNN earlier today, that is why I tried to find it again, to show my daughter
that really sucks, it is a great version
