I do as well, but then I think that of any production of that play. I saw it when it was first on Broadway and never understood the popularity.

I did enjoy it when I saw it on screen and on stage. And I'm not one of those who can't imagine anyone but John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in it. But this just fell so flat, and you couldn't even hear the lyrics well when there were soloists singing against the whole cast, because their mics not being adjusted for it. I gave up after less than a half hour.

Well, I was agreeing that the first two words are unwatchable

Watched the whole thing with my 6 year old niece; it wasn't great but it wasn't awful either.

Nothing beats the original film and that ensemble of talent, though.

I love the premise of the story; "sweet innocent girl gets guy by dressing like a slut."

Scooter--since you saw the play as well, was this production more like the play or the film. As I recall, the original play (on Broadway in the 70s) was a bit grittier than the film, with a lot of smoking, drinking, and cursing (Do a split, give a yell, shake a tit for old Rydell), and even a rumble a la jets and sharks. As I said, I was not a big fan of the play, but the movie appeared to be more of a Disney/Happy Days version. If I'm not mistaken, after the film there was also a revival which I imagine was a lot more like the film, and since this was TV I was betting this would be the same.

We' have now seen four of these one time live performances on TV of Broadway shows. I am sure we may see more of them as time goes on. Comparing them to movies is a little bit unfair; they are reconstructions of Broadway musicals, not of motion pictures.

Personally, I very much enjoyed "The Sound of Music"; less so "Peter Pan" and "The Wiz". I didn't watch "Grease".

BigRR, the 20 minutes or so that I could sit through did seem more Happy Days to me. Now that you made me think about it in that way, there was a syrupy quality to it that probably helped turn me off.

My daughters watched Grease and said there is going to be a live Passion Play on Fox around Easter time, set in the streets of New Orleans. I imagine it is an updated one, not the one on Oberemergau, but who knows?

Scooter--I wouldn't be surprised.

My thoughtful and careful analysis of "Grease" (whether movie or the recent live thing) was: "That'll be crap". So I didn't bother with either one. Vindicated again.

I do hope the Passion Play Big RR refers to is updated from the one on Gethsemane.

If it was on broadcast TV, it COULDN'T be much like the Broadway version. Hell...just one SONG (that was actually cleaned up for the movie) should have gotten it an R rating!

I take it you're referring to some of the original lines in the song "Greased Lightning".  I'm surprised they felt the need to edit it also.  Back in the 1970s when the movie was made?  Sure, I understand.
But I thought that today, pretty much anything goes.

Ah well, I'll still sing it with the original lyrics at karaoke.... as well as make my one-word change to "Summer Nights":

The original version (even the movie version) could not be played on broadcast TV even now.
