New Music Express - the 20 best folk albums of all time

and what should we find in the 20 best? Hmm?
Leonard Cohen – Songs Of Leonard Cohen (1967):
The poet Leonard Cohen’s first foray into music making is a dark and beautiful thing. Full of fiery and failed love affairs – think ‘Suzanne’ and ‘So Long, Marianne’ - his own brand of folk music is moody and meditative and deeply romantic.

I always do...think ‘Suzanne’
Whenever I think "unlistenable mawkish dreck"...

Your response to Meade makes me wonder how Meade will respond to your post. Then I thought to myself, "WWJD"...Lord Jim wrote:

That does it! I'll never be here again. I'm off. This is the end. Change the subject title for me. Never darken the door again. Gawn. Finito! And I mean it this time.

Now you've done it! I don't blame Meade one bit for being pissed off. He wasn't asking for a critique. He was sharing a list of folk albums that he thought people here might like...

Well, I really don't know just who/what produced this list of the best. I do see that 15/20, 75%, are performers I know not at all.
But yes, I would put Odetta on any list of even ten best.

Oh, you guys, be a bit kinder to Meade. Bless his heart... he means well.
All music is subjective but as (world) folk music goes I have no problem with this list although I'm unfamiliar with some of these artists. When I get in a folksy mood I'll download a few.
If you think you can do better with the genre post your own lists so we'll pick them apart, too.

Actually, I PMd Gob asking to have all your posts deleted.

Judging by all your posts since you left for good yesterday shows that it's hard to say goodbye. If you swallow your pride I'm sure Gob can be swayed to ignore your "delete all" request.MajGenl.Meade wrote:Actually, I PMd Gob asking to have all your posts deleted.
Besides that, wes will miss you deeply so maybe you'll reconsider your hasty decision and return for his sake. It's the right thing to do.

I just might, Ray. Your plea has touched my heart. For wesw, then.

Re: New Music Express - the 20 best folk albums of all time
I guess it depends on your definition of folk music, but did I miss the albums from Joni Mitchell, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Van Morrison? And you can make the case that artists like Neil Young, Steve Earle, James Taylor, etc. fit the genre. We could probably fill 20 pages with albums that most of us would think are better than most on that list (mainly because, like SG, we have never heard of most of the names on the list).

Ready... Aim... Sing...
A one and a two...

We are the Folk Song Army.
Everyone of us cares.
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares.
There are innocuous folk songs.
Yeah, but we regard 'em with scorn.
The folks who sing 'em have no social conscience.
Why they don't even care if Jimmy Crack Corn.
If you feel dissatisfaction,
Strum your frustrations away.
Some people may prefer action,
But give me a folk song any old day.
The tune don't have to be clever,
And it don't matter if you put a coupla extra syllables into a line.
It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English,
And it don't even gotta rhyme--excuse me--rhyne.
Remember the war against Franco?
That's the kind where each of us belongs.
Though he may have won all the battles,
We had all the good songs.
So join in the Folk Song Army,
Guitars are the weapons we bring
To the fight against poverty, war, and injustice.
Ready! Aim! Sing!

P.S. The list also needs several more Bob Dylan albums; The Times They Are A-Changin' isn't even his best.
