Literally.

Ellen DeGeneres got totally choked up today, as she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I don't know if it was happy, humble, or sad tears --- but they were certainly endearing.

I have to wonder if there wasn't a not so subtle dig at the Fuhrer intended by giving a medal to Lorne Michaels.

They were announced a month or so ago.

And then there was this one:

And in one endearing, yet well planned ceremony, Obama secures his position as a studio exec in Jeffrey Katzenberg's Hollywood after January 20th.

The White House... a stepping stone to stardom.

It seems to me that the medal is misnamed It should be something like The Presidential Medal of Merit or
Achievement. It seems to me that most of the people that get the medal are awarded it for some type of personal achievement. After all DeGeneres may be a good entertainer, but how did she contribute to the security or national interest of the United States.

Uh, by sacrificing her own well being to come out publicly and further the cause of gay rights?! Not to mention she's hugely accomplished in her field.

Go fuck yourself, really. :fu

Beyond that, a simple Wikipedia search will explain to you the PMF's history and show you the range of professions awarded PMFs, including ENTERTAINERS.

Art does add to the public sphere even if you don't like the art or artist.

I know that stuff; I know that Kennedy was the first to award the medal and FDR had a similar medal. I liked DeGeneres ok, she wasn’t my favorite host I preferred Oprah and the fact she is homosexual doesn’t bother me; I don’t judge other people’s search for happiness as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else.

But, I wasn’t referring to that, I talking about the name of the decoration and the reason for which it was awarded. Neither Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn or Ronald Reagan received the Presidential medal of freedom and both made great contributions to freedom in the twentieth century.
