hey.

does anyone remember the wolf hunting described in War and Peace?

IIRC, they used two types of dogs. a smaller fast dog, maybe called a laika... , I m not sure

...and there was a larger, more powerful dog who s name I can t recall at all.

I researched dogs fairly extensively on wwikipedia a few years ago, and remember finding the small type...

...but I don t think I found the larger.

anyone remember?

my son has a Norwegian elkhound and it got me to thinking about it again.

maybe I could find it on the google....

never mind. it was a borgois (sp)

and the wolf was run by some type of hound, but I didn t read back to find the breed. maybe later....

Norwegian Elk Hound was not bred for hunting elk. It is/was the typical Norwegian farm dog. Just bad translation. Just as the German Shepherd dog was not used in Germany for herding or guarding sheep.

the Norwegian elkhound is for hunting moose, they just call them elk over there.

the Norwegian elkhound is one of the most agile dogs in the world. have you ever seen one run?

they run the moose until they are exhausted t, then hold them at bay until the people arrive to kill the moose.

(and BP, I m not going to provide a link, but you are mistaken about what they were bred for, I will admit that after elk (moose) became extinct in Scandinavia the dogs weren t often used to hunt the non-existent animals)

Love the elk hound.
Smart, very smart dog.
Strong and have amazing stamina.
But I like my lab more.

I used to live in a town where the local radio/TV repair shop was owned by a guy named Warren Peace. I thought he was old when I knew him 40 years ago. I'm sure he was younger then than I am now. He worked over a '30s vintage Zenith radio for me. Still had all the old tubes and stuff needed to fix it. The drive from the station selection knob to the tuner was driven by a small belt. I doubt if anyone still has all that today. Well, maybe ebay.

the tuner knob will only move the needle slightly, if at all, and only in good weather....

...is there a belt that I can tighten or something?

and I have to turn it close to the station and let it slowly drift into a good position for reception.......

I don't think Warren Peace himself would know the answer to that one. I don't think he worked on car radios. Neither the business nor Warren are listed in the local phone book.

I've seen a simple "string" set up in a pull-pull type configuration. The string, on it's way between the dial and the needle winds around a variable capacitor which varies the "pull-in" frequency. If the needle moves a little (with a lot of turns of the knob), usually something is gummed up (like the rail that the needle moves along) causing the the knob pully to just rub the string rather than move it. No string movement = no pull-in frequency change.
