Oh that's just wrong on so many levels.

Judging the reactions, I'm glad these kinds of things get blocked.
:ok

Good god, Who would do that to a handsome man like KB?

It looks like a fantastic cast...

Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe...

Excellent group of actors to produce a remake of Murder On The Orient Express...

But I don't think I can get past that hideous, distracting, freak-show wrap-around mustache...

He was hardly more than five feet four inches but carried himself with great dignity. His head was exactly the shape of an egg, and he always perched it a little on one side. His moustache was very stiff and military. Even if everything on his face was covered, the tips of moustache and the pink-tipped nose would be visible.
Hmmmmm....

Nothing beats a well groomed chin puff... or landing strip.

I will have to watch the production, but I'm thinking that monstrosity will be hugely distracting. Bad call from the costume designers!

This version is very different from past incarnations with the curled ends and no disgusting chin patch. It's quite ugly, whereas prior incarnations have been attractive.

His moustache was very stiff and military.
Well, here's the Belgian King Albert I, and the mustache he was sporting during The Great War:

And a couple of other "Stiff and military" mustaches from the period:

The Kaiser:

Luddendorf:

A British version:

Presumably these are the sorts of examples Christie would have been drawing from...

Not that grotesque wrap-around parody monstrosity that Branagh is sporting...

I'm completely with BSG on this one...a very poor artistic decision...

ETA:

BTW, I'd also like to express my outrage and indignation that no Belgian actor ever gets cast to play Poirot, only a long succession of Brits...

What is the reason for this anti-Belgian bias and discrimination in casting what is probably the best known fictional Belgian character?

I'm sure it's deeply insulting to the Belgians, and wounding to their national pride...

(And if not, I'm happy to feel insulted and wounded for them...)

Go have a beer and some fries, and you'll feel much better.

Is there such a beast? ;-)

We have the complete series of Poirot, the David Suchet version at home, and are big fans. (Esp Hatch.)

We were lucky enough to see Suchet live on stage in Sydney, though unfortunately not playing Poirot.

His must be the definitive version surely? Just as Brett is the definitive Homes.

I'm wondering if this ludicrous face fungus is meant to distance Branagh from Suchet.

Can't argue with that.

Saw the movie tonight, and honestly, the mustache wasn't distracting at all. KB is still the master of his craft -- and he produced, directed, and stars in this movie. The cast is fabulous, but make no mistake, this is HIS film. Loyal to the original, lush, and funny. We completely enjoyed ourselves.

(and oh, LJ, I had forgotten, he's Irish, my lad).

I didn't wait, we saw it last night.

I have Suchet as the perfect Poirot archetype, with Ustinov a pale second. So Branagh was not ideal, and was far too physical in the role. It was as incongruous as seeing Holmes played by a short fat bald bloke. Not only that but Branagh seemed to be playing Poirot AS Holmes, esp in the opening scenes.

That just didn't work for me. (Surprisingly the moustache was the least of the diversions.)
He was hardly more than five feet four inches but carried himself with great dignity. His head was exactly the shape of an egg, and he always perched it a little on one side. His moustache was very stiff and military. Even if everything on his face was covered, the tips of moustache and the pink-tipped nose would be visible.
Bitching aside, the film was beautiful, lush scenery, superb settings, wonderful attention to the Art Deco of the time, (that train!!!)

The acting, well what do you expect from a cast like that? Depp was particularly impressive, Pfeiffer was dazzling, and Lucy Boynton, well...drop dead gorgeous....

Nicely shot, apart from some stupid scenes which were filmed from above, and just didn't work, and wonderful direction.

The story was reasonably true to the book. So all in all 7/10 from me.
