The revisit of Twin Peaks is all moody surrealism and none of the quirkiness or odd but likeable characters that made it initially popular. The critics seem to applaud how David Lynch does this aspect or that well, but at the end of the day, this is unwatchable for the vast majority of people -- which is what it became back in 1991 leading to its cancellation. Maybe in a world wide market there will be enough people who enjoy Lynch's bizarro world to make this worthwhile for Showtime, but everyone else is happy to avoid or remain ignorant of this type of storytelling.

If I'm not mistaken, Lynch only did the first half of the episodes; the rest were done by other directors. And that second part of the season was a lot more conventional than the Lynch part. Personally, I didn't like the second part as much (and I recall that was the conclusion of a lot of Lynch fans), but I do think the real problem is twofold--the reputation of the show after the Lynch episodes as being difficult to understand, and the complexity of the second half due to plotlines and characters.

I have the first episode of this new generation on my DVR, and hope to watch it in the near future.

Lynch did the first "season" of 8 episodes which drew everyone in. Then, the second season, there were other writers and pressure from ABC, but it went off the rails. Lynch may blame other people, but it was the surreal, obtuse vision that he is famous (infamous) for. If you liked the initial season of the original Twin Peaks, I doubt you will like this reboot. If you liked the second season, and movies like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, then you might like this new one. I'd be interested in your take.

I've only seen the first two episodes so far (Showtime is showing them in pairs), but I find it interesting. It's vintage Lynch in having a lot of odd scenes, but it does feel like it may have too many competing storylines in different cities to follow. I am cautiously optimistic that this will not be the case, but it remains to be seen. I'll update after I've seen a few more episodes.

FWIW, I liked the original episodes and both Blue Velvet (one of my favorite movies of all time) and Mulholland Drive.
