Singing and acting in hit 70s sitcom The Partridge Family, David Cassidy was an American heartthrob.
Cassidy's family told People he died surrounded "with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long".
"Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years," the statement read.
In one of his last major TV interviews, Cassidy revealed he was recently diagnosed with dementia.
"I could remember details of automobiles I drove in 1967, but it's the recent memory [that is the issue]," he told American TV host Dr Phil.
"When ... people who love you and care for you keep saying I just told you this, didn't you hear me? That's when I started to become very concerned."
