I'm usually dubious of remakes of old series, but I've been watching this all morning on Netflix and roaring with laughter. Justina Machado plays a veteran of the Afghan war who is raising two kids with the help of her mother (Rita Moreno, who often steals the show) after leaving her PTSD-affected, alcoholic husband whose refusal to get help made him dangerous. The whole premise has been brought up to date in smart ways, including re-imagining Schneider as a sensitive metrosexual.

Even though the original came along when I watched plenty of television, I can say that I do not recall ever seeing a single minute of it, for whatever reason. Reading the description of both series, the new one definitely looks like it's worth watching; thanks for the recommendation.

I don't have to be dipped in hot oil and deep-fried extra-crispy to know that I would not like it (being dipped in hot oil, that is), and the same line of logic applies to a show that has been 'rebooted' in the manner you have described.  Sometimes you can avoid wasting a lot of time if you do judge a book by its cover.

That you would not like it does not justify ascribing nefarious motives to those who produced it. It would be plain stupid for anyone remaking a series to fail to recognize that certain character types and situations that were relatable and funny 40 years ago would be seen as anachronistic today. One might as well forego a remake and just replay reruns of the original.

Of course, we know that your professed dislike comes from an assumption (incorrect, as it happens) you leaped to from my description of the character I used as an example.

Technology has enabled men with more leisure time, so less wealthy males can now fuss over their looks and aesthetics almost as much as women.
