Hollywood is considering censoring The King's Speech, the British film nominated for 12 Oscars, to remove coarse language for US audiences.

It is part of a plan to broaden the appeal of the movie in America where it has been given a Restricted rating, which means anyone under 17 wanting to see it has to be accompanied by an adult.

The R rating was made because George VI, played by Colin Firth, is shown swearing as he tries to overcome his stammer.

The film was given a lesser 12 rating in Britain where it has grossed about 19 million pounds ($30 million) in fewer than three weeks.

It has made nearly 38 million pounds ($61 million) in America, where it was released earlier. Hollywood executives now want to capitalise on the Oscar nominations.

Harvey Weinstein, whose studio The Weinstein Company released the movie, said: "The British numbers are huge because the rating lets families see the movie together.

"Tom [Tom Hooper, the director] and I are trying to find a unique way to do this that keeps his vision of the movie."

The number of cinemas in which the film is being shown in America is being doubled to more than 3,000.

Any new version of the film with sanitised dialogue would not be ready for US screening until after the Oscars ceremony on February 27.

We were going to take Hatch to see it tonight, should we wait for the bowlderised version? ;)

The MPAA ratings are a joke.

Ignored by all but a few non-thinking busy-bodies with nothing better to do.

No take Hatch, great movie Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush both deserve Oscars for their roles. The swearing is only in 2 parts loadsa swear words but used as an aid to his speech therapy and quite funny!

I agree; how the film got an R rating is ridiculous. They did the same thing for Little Miss Sunshine, but will allow hundreds to be explicitly killed on screen in PG-13 movies; ignore the rating and go.

Fuckityfuckity fuck~ Bugger bugger bugger. Colin Firth got to be quite the potty mouth. I was delighted by the R rating because there were no brats running about ruining the movie. Great pic btw.

Ridiculous, it was a great movie, the profanity was necessary to the story, and for gods sake who doesn't say "fuck" now and again? Apparently no one at the MPAA.

The great funny moment of the show to be cut? Idiocy.

We loved it, and as for the swearing? Well Hatch hears worse at home.

Great portrayal of Churchill by Timothy Spall, one of the UK's most underrated actors. Bonham-Carter as the queen mum was as beautiful as ever, Firth deserves better than an Oscar. Rush was his usual competent self. Guy Pearce was an eye opener, and I think Eve Best nailed Wallace Simpson perfectly.

Historically intriguing, I was left wondering how much was actual "fact."

The movie we saw had some slight colour hiccups / aberration in one scene.

This film isn't coming to my hick neck of the woods - so I look forward to seeing it on DVD, with fuckity-fucks unmoderated. ;)

You ought to use a different torrent site then... ;)

I thought it was a decent movie but not a great one. It is however the type of movie that wins lots of awards. I didn't think there was anything special about Colin Firth's performance... for a lot less money they could have had James Fleet in the role... after all, he has already done it in The Vicar of Dibley...

Guy Pearce did surprisingly well, Bonham-Carter had the right mix of humour and stuffiness and Geoffrey Rush played the part of Geoffrey Rush admirably. If they ever make a Rush biopic I think he would be a real contender for the lead. ;)

As for the swearing, it came out in a rush so fast as to be nearly unintelligible. I can't see it becoming a playground catchphrase somehow...

Geoffery Rush does do a pretty good Vincent Price.

I have to agree.
I've always liked him as the Marquis de Sade in "Quills"; not sure who else could have pulled that role off.

No one was bragging, just being honest.

Given what we hear about Hatch's accomplishments and goals at her age, I'd posit that hearing some colorful language at home isn't adversely affecting her.

My father had a mouth like a sailor - 9 years Navy after all, followed by 11 Army - and I heard every kind of colorful language in the home growing up.

There were things that my parents did to me in my childhood that harmed me, but using foul language wasn't in and of itself one of them.

Fuckity fuck fuck fuck! It's such a lovely word. :D

And yet the idiots at the MPAA seem concerned with preventing "poor, impressionable" children from hearing this language, yet quite content to allow them to vicariously experience graphic violence in PG-13 and below films. Assholes.

There does seem to be a disconnect there somewhere.

I put my hand up as being the house potty-mouth.

I really, really was good until I joined the Minister's office. No. REALLY I was.

However, language in the Min's office is used in all its possible forms ... constantly.

The Hatch is aware I have problems with my language now because of where I work. Plus I am too old, knackered and shattered at teh end of the day to put on my "thinking" brain and not use the ballsey words at home.

She will ofter ask if I swore at work today.

I often reply: It started with "fuck" and ended with "fuck" and had "fuck" in the middle. "Fuck-fuck-fuckity-fuck-fuck-fuckin-fuck".

I have done the same with the cunt-word too.

If there was a reason for me to use the nigger-word, it would have also been used.

I have used the slut and slag words as well. Oh, and the cock, bum, arse, buggery, piss, poo and shit words.

In fact other than nigger, I really can't think of what words I haven't used at both work and home.
