"StartUp"

StartUp is a gem I came across by accident...

I was doing a search on Roku for a channel that had Heroes (A "people with powers" show that was on from 2006-2010...if you like that sci-fi sub-genre, it's a good one; I definitely recommend it...on a par qualitatively with The Gifted, and far superior to the godawful Inhumans) and the only service that wasn't charging for it per-episode was a streaming service I had never heard of called Crackle...

Crackle is owned by Sony; if you're not familiar with it it's a free service with limited commercials (only 60-90 second commercial breaks)

After we finished watching Heroes, I started poking around to see what else Sony/Crackle had available, and that's when I came across StartUp...

StartUp is a Sony original show, there are 20 episodes so far (2 seasons of 10 episodes each; Season 3 is coming later this year)

The best known of the four starring cast members is Martin Freeman, (Sherlock, The Hobbit, Fargo) who is brilliant as a bent FBI agent. The only other starring cast member I was really familiar with is Edi Gathegi who plays a Haitian-American gang leader, (I knew him from House, The Blacklist and the short lived Blacklist Redemption)

In season two, Ron Perlman joins the cast in a major role...

The IMDB show description really doesn't do it justice (It doesn't even mention Freeman's role):
A desperate banker, a Haitian-American gang lord, and a Cuban-American hacker are forced to work together to unwittingly create their version of the American dream - organized crime 2.0.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5028002/

Here's the trailer for season one; it provides a little better description:

It has an IMDB rating of 8.1 which isn't bad, but I'd give it a solid 9. The casting, cast chemistry, writing, direction, cinematography and plot development are nearly on a par with top-quality crime suspense dramas like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and Fargo...

In fact if you liked any of those shows you're almost sure to like this one...

Otmara Marrero as Izzy Morales, the brilliant Cuban-American coder/hacker, is a particular stand out. I had never seen her in anything before, but she gives an Emmy quality performance.

The show is set in Miami, but most of the filming is actually done in Puerto Rico. (Which likely works out as a win-win. It's probably a lot cheaper to film in Puerto Rico than Miami, and the Puerto Rican economy can sure use the business...)

Four and a half stars. Jim Bob says check it out.
