Film fans have been given their first glimpse of Hollywood actress Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in upcoming film The Iron Lady.

Shooting has just begun on the film, written by Sex Traffic's Abi Morgan and directed by Mamma Mia's Phyllida Lloyd.

The film follows Baroness Thatcher as she broke through class and gender barriers to become prime minister.

The film also stars Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher. The cast also includes Richard E Grant and Anthony Head.

"The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge," said Streep.

"I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses - I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own," she added.

The film is a Pathe, Film4 and UK Film Council production.

The Thatcher era, 1979 to 1990, was a time of great social and economic change for Britain.

Elected just after the winter of discontent, Thatcher embarked on a tough reform programme - her top priorities were tackling inflation and the unions.

Her policies divided the country - the service sector and home ownership boomed, but manufacturing declined and unemployment soared.

Oh I'll see it.....

Just to ensure there's no revisionism in it. Oh, and Jim Broadbent is one of the best actors in the UK today.

I'm waiting to see this.

I guess if Hugh Laurie can sound American, Meryl can go British. She is a terrific actress. I'd probably watch it given a reasonable chance, though I wonder how well it will do. Americans seemingly can't get enough of British royalty, but not so sure about the real politicians. Nice to see Giles get a good role.

Another "lookalike".

You might have thought you'd stepped back in time if you went anywhere near London's High Court yesterday.

In an echo of the scenes in 1979 when widespread strikes by binmen marked the end of the Labour government of James Callaghan, mounds of fake rubbish were shipped in for the film The Iron Lady.

Great job by the makeup artist.

I was an admirer of Maggie, but I will wait until the movie comes out on television. Wouldn't spend actual money to see it.

They're all at it! :)
Actress Julianne Moore is to play former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in a TV film about the 2008 US elections, HBO has announced.

Game Change will focus on Republican John McCain's presidential campaign and his choice of Palin, then governor of Alaska, as his running mate.

Jay Roach of Meet the Parents fame will direct the film, based on the book by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

Moore, 50, is a four-time Academy Award nominee.

She was recently seen as a lesbian mother in The Kids are All Right and played a porn star in 1997 film Boogie Nights.

No other cast members have been announced and it is not yet known when production on the film will begin.

Palin was famously impersonated by comedienne Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live during John McCain's unsuccessful presidential bid.

The Game Change announcement comes amid mounting speculation that Palin is to run for president herself in 2012.

I am sure Meryl will do a better job as the Thatch than she did as Lindy chamberlain in Evil Angels.

Her Aussie accent was more Sud Afrikaans.

A drongo took moi bay bee.

I think she's done a British accent before, in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'. She can do well many different accents.

Except Australian. She can't do an Aussie accent for money.

I had to think for a minute about 'Evil Angels'. We knew it as 'A Cry in the Dark'...
