Movies you may have missed...

Every now and then a gem of a movie escapes mass attention. Often this is due to the lack of a big Hollywood star or a big Hollywood budget. I thought it might be a nice idea to share these (old or new) with the board.

For starters:

Cube (1997)
A clever mind-fuck of a thriller. Seven complete strangers wake to find themselves in a kafkaesque maze with a few nasty surprises in store.

Let him Have it! (1991)
The true story of the most farcical miscarriage of justice ever. 18 yr old Derek Bentley is sentenced to death for use of an ambiguous phrase in a critical situation. Starring the future Dr Who Chris "Other planets have a North too..." Eccleston.

Four Lions (2010)
Proving that a movie about suicide bombers can be funny. A group of inept British jihadists attempt to bring terror to London. Written and directed by the brilliant Chris Morris. This movie also attempts to answer the most important question of all: "Is a wookie a bear?"

Ravenous (1999)

Captain John Boyd gets a "Promotion" to a secluded fort in the California Rockies during the Spanish-American War. Cabin Fever winds up being the least of his worries.

In Bruges (2008)

After a botched job two hitmen hide out in Bruges while things cool down. Worth it just to see Ralph Fiennes manage to drop more F-bombs than ever thought humanly possible.

Very Bad Things (1998)

Exactly what it says on the tin. This "comedy" is the story of a Bachelor Party in Vegas where everything goes wrong and whatever the choice the immoral one is undoubtedly made.... over and over and over again. The first time I saw it I just sat in abject horror at what I was witnessing.... until the last scene.

Romeo is Bleeding (1993)

The story of a Corrupt Police officer who gets in too deep and involved with a truly twisted woman. Best described by my brother as "The Male Equivalent of a Chick Flick"

Good call CP! I loved this movie. It's also worth checking out the 'Fuckorama' on the DVD extras where they've edited the whole movie down to just each occurence of the word fuck. :)

I think this quote sums up the movie nicely...

Ray: "A great day this has turned out to be. I'm suicidal, me mate tries to kill me, me gun gets nicked... and we're still in fucking Bruges!"

Yeah I saw that. I think the rest of the movie was shorter.

Ken: Harry, let's face it. And I'm not being funny. I mean no disrespect, but you're a cunt. You're a cunt now, and you've always been a cunt. And the only thing that's going to change is that you're going to be an even bigger cunt. Maybe have some more cunt kids.
Harry: [furious] Leave my kids fucking out of it! What have they done? You fucking retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids!
Ken: I retract that bit about your cunt fucking kids.
Harry: Insult my fucking kids? That's going overboard, mate!
Ken: I retracted it, didn't I?

Not really a "hidden gem" but a "Gem right out in the open cleverly disguising itself as a lump of shit"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

No really it's hilarious.

Raising Arizona (1987)

Funniest thing on the planet, and it didn't even try to be, was just folks. Nicolas Cage's Magnum opus, and he didn't know it neither! The Redneck's redneck movie...

How did "Saving Grace" do in the USA?

If you aint seen it it's a hoot, and led to the TV series "Doc Martin".

Filmed in beautiful Cornwall

Going to be watching this tonight! (Thanks to Sean and the wonders of the interwebz.) Will report back. (I also have "In Bruges" queued up, want it Sean?)

I have to say the trailer has given me high hopes, I hope they come to fruition.

Ps. Can I very highly recommend this software?

http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

I use it for all DVD and video reburning, amazing for a bit of free kit!!

I just watched two movies that (pleasantly) surprised me, despite not really meeting Sean's OP criteria. What are the odds of flipping two DVD cases and have both come up heads?

X-Men First Class. Far better than all the other X-person movies I thought. Perhaps could have done without Huge Jackoff's cameo which was probably vastly surprising and amusing to those who think that f*** and c*** are the epitome of skilled writing.

The Abyss. Granted James Cameron's 'over-the-top let's be ETernally grateful to those much nicer non-humans' and pathetic kumbaya conclusion are positively vomit-inducing, but the bulk of the movie was (IMO) an interesting and nail-biting adventure set in a vastly different world than we are used to seeing in movies.

FWIW (not much)

Oh phew. I thought you were going to post that I fell asleep (as usual) in front of Four Lions last night, even though I was thoroughly enjoying it at the time.

But you didn't.

Thank God. That might have been embarrassing to me.

Very good film, very funny, pitch black humour, with a savage ending.

It left many questions hanging there.

Why was his wife so placid about her husband wanting to blow himself and innocent people up, she was a fucking nurse ffs.
