So I said in another thread I’ve got this new unlimited movie tickets membership with Regal so going to the movies a bunch for the first time in over a year. (I quit Movie Pass after a few months when the restrictions became insane and I could only see movies I didn’t care about - they ended up going bankrupt.)

Anyway, two movies I’ve seen that are not to be missed, very powerful acting all the other stuff and stories that must be seen:

Joker - beyond brilliant and Joaquin Phoenix should get an Oscar but probably won’t because Hollywood

Dark Waters - the story of DuPont’s poisoning of every living creature on Earth, terrific film and Oscar worthy performance by Mark Ruffalo


I unreservedly recommend both films to you, my friends and foes.

Last week I spent some time with my oldest grandson, about 25, in Virginia Beach VA. He has a public school education, does not watch Fox tv, reads the local newspaper (Pilot, Norfolk, VA better local newspaper than Philly Inky or Wilmington DE Journal) occasionally. Lives at home with mother.

I said something about the DuPont company and he had no idea what I was talking about.

I saw both of these movies. If someone could combine the two plots with the Joker being the lawyer going after DuPont executives, it would make another good movie.

I haven't seen either, but the thought is amusing. Kind of like a Toxic Avenger redux with a wicked sense of humor. what would Batman do--fight on behalf of the polluters, or join forces with the Joker in hunting down and punishing them?

I don’t blame him, most people know nothing about it. It’s what’s most chilling about the whole story - that they deliberately poisoned the air and water and bodies of every living creature on the planet, that they paid a fine to the EPA that represented a few hours worth of the yearly profit made from Teflon, that they then paid out on individual lawsuits about 2/3 of one year’s profits from Teflon, that nobody at the company was held in any meaningful way accountable for willful actions resulting in the sickening and untimely deaths of thousands of people, and that they’ve traded in the C-8 responsible for all this for another synthetic compound already showing signs of significant harm to human health and life.

Dark Waters isn’t just about DuPont and C-8/Teflon; it’s about the monster that capitalism can be, and how human life just doesn’t really matter if it stands in the way of maximum profits. There are far too many stories like this all around us; Dark Water just gives voice to one and reminds us of the banality of evil.

"Dark Water" -- I imagine that even if this flick was panned nothing would stick to it.

Damned pollution! Dark Water - plot summary excerpt:

In the bathroom, Cecilia passes out as dark water gushes from the toilets and sinks. As Dahlia is busy meeting her lawyer, Jeff Platzer, Kyle takes Cecilia to his apartment. That night, Dahlia follows footsteps to the roof and sees that water is spilling from the water tower. Inside she finds Natasha's body and horrified by this, she calls the police. Veeck is arrested for negligence as he was aware of her body.

Can't think how I missed this in 2005.

And then there is "Dark Waters" (2019). Not sure what that's about.
