If you didn't believe that the content of those Oscar winning envelopes was a secret known only to the accountants....

...last night's debacle should convince you that it's true.

I haven’t watched the oscars in well over 15 years. Want to explain your OP?

Someone thought it would be a good idea to announce the Best Actor category last of all, because they believed that late Chadwick Boseman had it in the bag and figured that the night could end with a stirring posthumous tribute to him. But alas, Anthony Hopkins won instead, and so the result was an anticlimactic finish to what I hear (didn't bother to tune it at all this year) was a complete mess of a production anyway.

An unintended, yet clearly accepted, consequence was to detract from the (predicted) victory of the first non-white woman to win Best Director and to produce the Best Picture.

Yep, that was a big gaffe. But only one of many.

Of course, the Glenn Close dancing was clearly set up in advance. And it was a complete waste of time and had little, if anything, to do with the movies.

FWIW, this was the worst Oscars telecast I have seen (and I have watched since the 60s--nearly 50 years); it could have been good if they remembered they were there to celebrate movies and showed some clips, but Soderberg knew "better". I can't fault @W for her not watching; I may join her if they keep this format next year.

They are all a complete waste of time. The only good parts used to be acerbic comedians taking the piss - but you can usually get that on YouChewb.

NB OK they got "My Octopus Teacher" right. As to the rest, I probably will not see a single one.

Might be more to that than meets the eye.

A lot of things are a complete waste of time. The Oscars are not my waste of time, but folks who have seen recent movies or just like looking at the clips and retrospectives used to get a fair amount decent material to offset the interminable and endless self-congratulatory, "aren't we swell", and "let me thank one more person, he's my dog actually", vapid air space. But apparently this year they decided to see if they could further pare the dwindling interest.

But it was the most diverse Oscars ever, that must count for something surely?

If that's what you're looking for, then maybe. But then I don't think diverse has to equate with boring.
