A £24,000 sculpture meant to provide residents of a new housing estate with a space for 'contemplation' has provoked widespread condemnation after being compared to 'random sticks stuck in dog poo'.

Linden Homes commissioned artist Michael Dan Archer to create the steel and limestone artwork at the Longacre estate in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

It was approved by the local authority despite numerous objections from the public and councillors.

Now the developers are facing a backlash from residents who complain that while money has been spent on the sculpture, their roads are unfinished.

The company says the installation provides a 'place to sit and contemplate'.

I would have said that fixing that ugly lawn should have taken precedence over installing any art piece on it. As it is, it makes anything placed on it look junky.

I would agree that this is an example of a colossal waste of taxpayers funds.

That looks like sign posts that have been left to rust after removing the signs.

I think it's beautiful artwork. It makes me feel like contemplating.

They look like those things the dentist sticks in your mouth to make a crown. Except of course much larger. *Don't go there Joe.

You've got a point there.

Maybe the artist is also a dentist.
