This upcoming series on PBS is about a London area in which fascism was endemic in the 1960s. It was long gone by the time I bought a flat there within about 200 yards of the street which is now a market area. I bought the flat for £21,000 in 1980 and sold it for £26,000 in 1985 - it would now be worth close to £400,000. Contact me for financial advice anytime you want.

Plenty of examples of "lost" fortunes in selling a home when a person moves away. I'll put my parents sale of a modest home in Cupertino in mid-60s up against any other for the theoretical loss of wealth (it is worth 200 times what they sold if for). I apparently did not "learn" from their example as my first home which I bought in 1987 for $83K and sold ten years later for $100K is now valued at $750K. Of course, I did try to keep the house but hated being a landlord. If you keep rolling your equity into your new home, you keep the asset part of the home working for you.
