RIP Jeff Beck

Post by Sue U »

A guitar giant and one of the greatest musicians of our era has left the room. I never got to see him and that's a big regret I'll have forever. He was on tour a while ago with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass and that's a show I really wanted to see.

It's too late tonight, but tomorrow I'm gonna dig out my copy of Wired and crank it to 11 for old times' sake.

GAH!

I heard this too; IMHO he was the absolute greatest of the great rock guitarists and this is a big loss. I never got to see him in concert either, but I do have some vinyl recordings I want to pull out. Thanks for the video.

There's nobody that I'm aware of that played or sounded anything like Jeff Beck. I still remember the first song I ever heard him playing on (or at least the first song in which I knew he was playing). It was "I Ain't Superstitious" with Rod Stewart singing. I loved the guitar (and the drum solo at the end). He was an inspiration to me as a guitar player (but I never tried to play like him - fortunately for everyone within listening distance).

Listened to "Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer group: Live!" for the first time in years, yesterday. The man was a genius

And now David Crosby. Over the last few years we have seen Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Charlie Watts, Christine McVie, Judith Durham, Helen Reddy, Meat Loaf, John Prine . . . .

We got used to a bunch of them dying of drugs and exhaustion in their 20s (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison et al) but now they and we are just getting old.

Sorry.

Somewhere there is a painting of the Stones' frontman, a la Dorian Gray...

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

With the sea-change in media -- radio, recorded music, tv, movies, and now internet -- plus the substantial increase in disposable income and free time, there was and is an exponential growth in well-known entertainers, leading to more of said deaths than ever before. And getting old puts us in the no fun zone more than we'd like but still better than the alternative.

Within the last couple of years rock stars have been dropping like rocks. In a few years, there will be more "Tribute Bands" than living ones. After that, there will only be Tribute Fans because the original fans will be dead too.

We're all doomed.

Eventually we'll all be in Rock & Roll heaven....or hell... depending on who you liked.
