When Sinead O'Connor passed away earlier this year, millions of people around the world genuinely mourned her passing.

When Shane MacGowan passed away this week, millions of people around the world began to genuinely mourn his passing.

Both brough light and incredible art into this broken world and by so doing relieved the anguish of life as experienced by millions of people. Their legacy remains and will continue to connect with their fellow humans for generations to come.

I am not in this world to "bring light and incredible art into this broken world" or "relieve the anguish of life as experienced by millions of people".   I am also not in this world to live up to anyone's else's expectations of me, except for maybe those of my parents — and they could be summed up as "stay out of serious trouble, become a productive member of society, and try to be happy while doing it."   So far, I think I've been doing a pretty good job of that.

And as for "who will miss me when I'm gone"?   Look in the mirror and ask yourself the same question.   Maybe you have a family and children who will miss you, for a while — but in terms of the rest of the world or even people on the other side of Boston, you're just another cipher, no bigger or smaller than I am.
