I went outside tonight and snapped this with my iPhone. The moon was behind a few clouds and appeared brighter in the photo than it did to my eyes for some reason that only my phone understands....

The cameras/phones must have better ability to process the light because the same thing happens with the aurora borealis - they are often much brighter in photos than they appear to the naked eye.

One of the engineers here probably understands why?

I'm sure it is explained in the photography book I bought and never got around to reading lol.

Google tells me that cameras are able to see a broader spectrum of light wavelengths than what the human eye can process - so, more light!

That's true BSG.

Moonrise over the beach at Groot Brakrivier, Mossel Bay. The sun was setting 180 degrees away and the moon reflected red . . . and to my eye, the sand on the beach was invisible. But the camera "saw" it.

That is a very interesting photo, Meade - almost like a good v. evil composition going on there.
