Oscars 2026

I cannot believe Eddington did not at least get a nomination for best original screenplay or best actor for Joaquin Phoenix. I know it's supposed to be satirical, but that movie left me deeply disturbed.
Last night we watched Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, which was a bit obvious and predictable but nevertheless fun to watch, with plenty of laughs.

I've seen Frankenstein, Train Dreams and Sinners
Of those, I really appreciated the music and acting in Sinners. But I'd vote for Train Dreams. Both are highly original in concept and execution but . . . ya know . . . zombies?
Don't know about the others.

I’ve seen Sinners but probably none of the other nominated films. Will be watching Eddington and Train Dreams this weekend, they both sound excellent. I love Joel Edgerton’s work, at least what I’ve seen thus far.

BSG: I'd like to know what you think of Eddington.
I saw Frankenstein; nice film, very artfully done, but not an Oscar winner in my view. Train Dreams is still on my list to see. I hadn't heard anything about Sentimental Value til this week; anyone seen it?

Have not seen any of them. Based on remarks here, I went to Wikipedia to read about Eddington. I like a quote there from Brian Tallerico:
Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com gave the film two and a half stars out of four, saying that the film was "not just about the divisiveness of 2020; it's designed to be divisive itself in 2025. To that end, even if you hate it, it's kind of done its job."
I have enough divisiveness in my life just watching the news. I don't think I want to see it.

I guess Mission Impossible broke out?
Eddington is attacked by the terrorists who kidnap Michael from the sheriff's office holding cell and set several fires during their escape. Joe and Guy find Michael in the desert, where he tries to warn them not to get close. An explosive detonates when the officers approach, killing Guy and severely wounding Michael. Joe heads back to Eddington, where he is targeted by snipers. After evading them in the desert and his home, he breaks into a gun store to arm himself. He fires his weapons haphazardly, accidentally shooting Butterfly's leg off who is then killed by a sniper moments later. Joe is eventually cornered and stabbed in the head by a terrorist, causing significant brain damage. He is saved by Brian, who guns down Joe's attacker while filming on his phone.

Well yes but I'd ask you to put the few minutes of extreme violence at the (nearly) end in the context of the story, because it sets up the denouement. I am not at all a fan of gratuitous film violence (can't stand "action" movies), but I think this is really worth a watch.

In the final scene of Eddington, a young male nurse/caregiver is in bed with Dawn and the paralyzed Joe. Dawn (Deidre O'Connell) gets into bed with Joe and the nurse, who then begin to embrace, highlighting a bizarre, new, and dependent power dynamic in the film's concluding, surreal moments

Brilliant, and deeply disturbing.
Going to have to watch it again tomorrow while I still have it rented.
The look backward is insightful to how extremely fucked up we are now.
