This has just been 'erected' down the road from where I live.

Who ever designed it (and got paid for it) is having a good ole laugh.

They are having a $400,000 laugh as that was the price of this enormous fiberglas cock.

I have to say I have not seen in Canberra much that I would consider good public art. Take this for instance, it is neither original, nor is it stimulating, it is not well done, it shows little craft. It’s bland, it’s just another quasi “big thing”. In fact if they had made it a real “big thing” it may have served a purpose in attracting big thing fans.

No one will tell me that there is not at some art school in Canberra someone who could have come up with some better idea than this, and made it for a fraction of the price.

And I still say that any “art ” which is going to be foisted into the public, should have a display of models of competing proposals, and sketches work ups, CGI images etc toured around the public libraries, so that the public can comment on them BEFORE the money is spent, here it's chosen by the politicians.

I'm sure I was not alone in not knowing that $400 k was going to be spend on this giant garden centre bargain basement lawn ornament.

The "Owl" thing just looks like so much pretentious crap to me. Where all the "Art" aficionados stand around rubbing their chins and nodding their heads sagely saying; "Ahhh interesting..." Because they didn't get the Freudian implication.

that owl kind of reminds me of the logo of White Owl Cigars, one of the cheapest owls I can think of. Well the cigar and the phallus and all that imagery rolled into the logo.

I'm not sure that angle improves the view. It still looks like a cock.

Someone suggested it was called Jon after the Chief. Possibly a good idea.
