A rainbow party is a supposed group sex event featured in an urban legend spread since the early 2000s. It's not urban legend in these parts - rainbow parties, I mean. I can't get very specific, just to say that the things I hear from the school counselors and from minors related to my juvenile and adult court cases - well, I'm not all that sorry I don't have kids in these days.

I know everyone says that from generation to generation, but with digital imagery so easy to create and share, and with the kinds of sexual behaviors that seem to be the 'norm' even in rural America - it's a frightening age in which to parent children.

It's always a frightening age in which to parent children. But unlike my parents, I'm not terribly worried about mine being drafted and shipped off to war. Teen sex has always been and always will be, and I think it's actually easier these days to teach your children to make good choices about sex, specifically because of the ready availability of bad examples. The hardest part is gearing the information appropriately for the age and emotional readiness of the child. My son (now going on 17) seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders on this subject; we've been talking to him about it since he was old enough to notice that girls are different from boys. My girls are still very young, and seem to have no idea that boys even exist other than as some kind of vague classroom annoyance at school, but soon enough they will be "tweens," when it will be more urgently an issue. I'll just have to wait and see how that works out. On the plus side, we now live in a town where teen pregnancy is not the norm and the vast majority of kids go on to higher education, so I'm hoping this type of peer pressure works positively with our own efforts.
