"Literally" barbers? Dear god.Courtney Love has accused the Muppets new movie of raping the memory of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain.
First Johnny Depp complained that being photographed was like rape, then Kim Novak said The Artist's soundtrack reminded her of being raped, now Courtney Love has accused the Muppets of raping the memory of her late husband Kurt Cobain.
Love told website TMZ that the Oscar-winning hit movie The Muppets "raped" Cobain's memory in the film's use of the Nirvana hit Smells Like Teen Spirit.
In the film, a barber shop quartet of muppets, who are literally barbers shaving and cutting the hair of Jack Black, sing an accapella version of the song, with Black angrily asserting "you're ruining one of the greatest songs of all time!"
The producers of the film were licensed to use the song by Primary Wave Music, the company that bought the right to distribute the Nirvana back catalogue from Love. They also obtained permission from the surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, and Grohl even appears in the movie.
Despite this, Love claims to have absolute power over the commercial use of Cobain's music, and asserts that she at no point approved the use of the song in the film.
Love was the sole holder of the rights to the Nirvana catalog following Cobain’s death in 1994, however sold 25 percent for $50 million in 2006. She was offered $162 million for the remaining rights in 2010 after revealing that she was considering selling off the remainder because the royalty payments are "cursed".
She and her daughter Frances Bean still receive royalties for use of the music, which would include the use in The Muppets
