I just finished listening to a Lee Childs audio book, The Affair, narrated by Dick hill. He is a god narrator, if you ever get a chance to check out his work do so. A good audio book requires both a good author and a good narrator; Dick Dill is good .

Tom Cruise was easily the best thing about the recent shipwreck known as "Rock of Ages," but now comes a palette cleanser, the trailer for his next film, "Jack Reacher."

Based on the Lee Childs novel "One Shot," the film stars Cruise in the title role (natch), an ex-army cop who is called in to find the sniper whose murderous rampage left five dead and the wrong man under arrest.

You wouldn't know any of this from watching the new clip, however. All the teaser gives us is a guy in a hospital bed bemoaning Reacher's badassedness, and Reacher driving around in a turbo SS and beating bad guys into submission.

The film was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who previously worked with Cruise on "Valkyrie," and boasts a pretty sweet supposition cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog, Robert Duvall and David Oyelowo.

"Jack Reacher" opens Dec. 21. With any luck the Holmes/Cruise nonsense will be behind us by then

Tom Cruise plays a ex-army cop , he's a pretty good ex-army cop , until he has a crisis of confidence. Then he meets a girl who persuades him he can be a pretty good ex-army cop again...

Tom Cruise cannot act and is half Reacher's size. He should be played by Hugh Jackman (Wolverine). Right size, right age, and can actually act.

You think that this another case where a good story has been shot to pieces by bad production decisions?

Why would Grant go along with this; if the movie bombs his character will be branded as a box office failure? He is starting to get old and may not get another chance. It can‘t be he needs the money he has published a pile Reacher novels.

Can you imagine working as an audio book narrator? Would that not be the ideal liberal arts career? For a lover of books it could be heaven or hell. It would be great if you were narrating a book you loved and hell if you were narrating a book you hated. You probably would have to be a Dick Hill before you could pick the books you wanted to read. Think about it Gone with the Wind could pay off your mortgage and The World According to Garp could put your kid through college.

Having recently got into audiobooks again, the quality of reader makes a huge difference.

Tony Robinson reading "Guards! Guards!" was perfect, Kerry Shale reading "Notes from a Small Island," equally so. The "Jaws" audiobook I got was read in a monotone flat and uninteresting voice, I barely did one CD of it.

BBC radio plays are even better than audiobooks.

I have had the same problem. They might have been great books but the narrator was so boring that I just could not get into the story. Some of the worse were authors. Being a good writer doesn’t make one a good reader. However, William Golding did an excellent job of both writing and narrating The Lord of The Flies.

I wish I could still get the BBC, but I would need satellite radio to do that.

First heard it when I was in high school on an "alternative" rock station; found it on cassette, and now I've got it on CD....

Listened to it with Tati a few years ago and even though she was only six it completely held her attention... when Jimmy gets a couple of years older I'm going to share it with him too....
