For Meade

Heck Of A Guy
Poet Laureate Of Pessimism
Can't believe it wasn't #1
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is

Smiling Dada Of Despair and Master of the Egg Salad Sandwich would be my personal favorites.

Thanks Keld - 1heckofaguy's site is one of my favourites. It's been a wonderful complement to Jarrko's LC Files.

One nickname I've never quite understood is LJ's "Mumbles". That may be applicable to Bob Dylan but certainly not to LC. One thing he has never done is mumble - his articulation is spot on. But the man's a poet and a genius and the importance of clearly communicating the words removes any chance of 'mumbling'. His voice may be described (by those of little musical appreciation and even less taste ha!) as "gravelly" perhaps - or "gruff". Maybe even lugubrious at times.

The graph below depicts the number of covers vs TV/radio usages of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” over a couple decades. You'll notice that usage peaked around 2004 which was the year that many people believed that he had died 20 years earlier.

I see several that work really well (others not so much):

Dr. Kevorkian Of Song (He certainly has had that effect on music....though it's not "assisted suicide" so much as "pre-meditated murder"...maybe "Dr. Mengele Of Song" would be better)

Prince of Pain (Nobody can inflict it on the ears like Ol' Lenny)

Crown Prince of Pain (I think we can just go ahead and declare him "King Of Pain")

Somnambulist Without An Alarm Clock (My personal favorite :ok )

Patron Saint Of Suicides (No question he can certainly have that affect; a few minutes of Lenny can have just about anyone looking for a semi to dive in front of.)
That may be applicable to Bob Dylan but certainly not to LC.
Oh good Lord, Gen'l, compared to Lenny, Bob is Demosthenes....

There were many in that list were way off, ("God's Dearest Sunbeam"? Really?) but I definitely want to take issue with this one:

World’s Only Interesting Canadian

Okay, that may not be much of a compliment, but come on, fair is fair.... even Brian Mulroney is more interesting....

The list also inspired me to come up with a few of my own:

Prince of Pablum

Rebel Without A Tune

Master Of Audial Despair

Creepy Creep

William Hung of the Terminally Downbeat

Maestro Of Monstrosities

Duke Of Dreck

Plutarch refers to a weakness in (Demosthene's) voice of "a perplexed and indistinct utterance and a shortness of breath, which, by breaking and disjointing his sentences much obscured the sense and meaning of what he spoke."
Guess you're right LJ - compared to the flawless diction of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan is demosthenic!!

LC is the Colosseum of Catharsis; the Louvre of Lost Love; the Strauss of Stress; the Tower of Tune; in fact....

His words poetic are not pathetic.
On the other hand, babe, he shines,
And I can feel after every line
A thrill divine
Down my spine.
Now humans fey like our Lord J
Might think that your song is bad,
But I got a notion
I'll second the motion
And this is what I'm going to add;

He's the TOPS!

I mean, come on guys, you can tell me, truthfully, do these lyrics seem even remotely depressing?

Maybe I'm still hurting
I can't turn the other cheek
But you know that I still love you
It's just that I can't speak
I looked for you in everyone
And they called me on that too
I lived alone but I was only
Coming back to you

Ah they're shutting down the factory now
Just when all the bills are due
And the fields they're under lock and key
Tho' the rain and the sun come through
And springtime starts but then it stops
In the name of something new
And all the senses rise against this
Coming back to you

Positively uplifting mate. If I didn't know better I'd say it was a Gilbert and Sullivan tune.

Yeah, I'm surprised Up With People hasn't recorded a version....

Did Lenny put that one on his Christmas album?

Could you imagine Lenny answering the phones at a Suicide Prevention Hotline?

That would make a great Saturday Night Live routine....
