I tend to like movies that don't fit neatly into a little box or create their own little box. Such as From Dusk Till Dawn (the original I refuse to see the sequels out of principal) Which starts out as a crime drama and suddenly without warning takes a left turn into B Movie Horror.
Then there's Romeo Is Bleeding Who's best genre description I've heard (and I subsequently stole) is "a chick flick for guys" that is a movie that is to men what "chick flicks" are to women.

Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: Genre defying films
I submit for your approval:'Being John Malkovich', I'm guessing the closest you could get to labeling it is 'science fiction'. Maybe science fantasy? Maybe a science comedy fantasy?
It's so full of weird, quirky, improbabilities that somehow manage to support an interesting and engaging story.

Re: Genre defying films
That reminds me of Adaptation. It's about that same screenwriter hired to adapt a book about orchids into a movie.

Re: Genre defying films
You know, I still think about that movie trying to figure it out, but Nicholas Cage did an outstanding performance before letting his talent go into a death spiral.
Re: Genre defying films
From dusk till dawn is definitely a HORROR flick.
However being john malkovich is a STUPID flick...

Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is
