Do you hear the people sing?

You will, come December 25th, because Les Misérables is coming to the big screen:

I haven't gone to a cinema to see a movie in four years (and only then because I was taking shelter during a snowstorn) but I will definitely be going to see this. I think the fact that they will be singing live rather than to a pre-recorded track will give the thing a completely different feel than the typical movie musical. And some of the casting choices are pretty cool, like Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenardiers, I can't wait to see what they do with it.

Wow, that looks magnificent... just that snippet of Anne Hathaway, dispelled all doubts I had about her singing... I was touched nearly to tears by just that short moment.

What a great idea and a terrific story to do it with.

Casting Cameron Crowe as Javert is a good touch too. He will play that inhuman monster quite naturally*.

Finally, you are showing some accurate self-knowledge. I'm surprised. You usually are not so honest about your lack of literacy and musical taste.

One of my all-time favorite shows. Try it, you might like it.

(although mostly I agree with Scooter, I'm just trying to be polite)

This "humour" thing is a complete mystery to retard, isn't it?

Thanks but I'll take a pass Guin....

I'm not a "shows" person...

There again, I wouldn't expect everyone to enjoy what I enjoy in music, each to their own taste eh?

(Unless you're a five year old like retard....)

That's why there is chocolate and vanilla. I'm surprised, since you like music. This is really good music - but yes, to each his or her own!

I'm not a big fan of musicals or the music from them (Fiddler being a notable exception). I also greatly dislike opera. The songs usually feel contrived and unnatural to me. It's a bit like watching an Elvis movie where he suddenly bursts into song for no apparent reason and the other characters somehow fail to fall in and give him a damn good kicking...

If you're gonna act then act! If you're gonna sing then sing. Don't be greedy and try to grab it all says I! ;)

Note to rubato. The 'winking face' is to show that the preceding remark was meant in jest. Do try to keep up...

Well, I'm a straight guy who loves musicals, (not a big fan of opera generally; since most of them aren't in English, and I have this funny thing about liking to be able to understand what I'm watching...) I'm sure I'll go to see this...(But I'll probably wait till after Christmas day...not a big fan of standing in long lines to cram into a crowded theater on Christmas....I only did that once, for The Godfather III...never again.)

Saw a stage production of Les Miz years ago and really enjoyed it....Some of the casting for the film does look intriguing....

I will admit to enjoying two musicals, Spamalot and Rocky Horror....

Well I love opera and theatre too -- and I also have classical opera voice training and performed in musicals all through high school, and did stage production in college. I was never a lead voice though, always a supporting one, so maybe that's why it all still thrills me -- my vicarious dreams of the stage. I will say, the voice training is terrific for the courtroom and public speaking -- i have never had a problem projecting my voice!

We have tickets to the Met to see Le Nozze de Figaro in November and I'm very excited about it!

Hmmm, and yet some here said they liked Madonna's Evita? ;)

While her singing had improved (only three months prior) for that musical, it still lacked what performances like Les Misérables rivet their audiences with: Emotion and Passion. A good singer should be able to act with their voice; to convey a complex character not just with the words, but how they are sung. In fact, a great singer should be able to just sing the notes without lyrics, and you would still be able to recognize the feelings they are singing about.

Oops, cross-post guin
