I thought it was about WW2 Japanese soldiers loading a barge with prisoners they captured in the Philippines or Singapore or Malaya. Hence the need for poles with hooks on them

To be honest, The cheesy animae is so distracting, (frankly, I feel like I should be watching this with Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo) that whatever "message" there may be here is so buried beneath the poor animation and the hopelessly bad translated dialog, that the deeper "message" is lost on me....

It's not so much a message as relaying the experience. And it's circa 1983 anime what do you expect? That being said I can tell you overstated how far you got into the film. Then again if you had got to the critical moment I doubt you would have been able to stop
