The Hip Op-eration Crew is: The World’s Oldest Hip Hop Dance Group.
The Mega Crew dance troupe consists of 37 senior citizens aged between 66 and 96 years old. All Crew members are neighbours and live on Waiheke Island, a small island off the East coast of New Zealand in the South Pacific.
The motto of The Hip Op-eration Crew is RHY = Respect and Honour Youth.
Hip Hop dance is a vehicle to not only form stronger connections with our young people but to also promote attitudinal change in our society; towards both aged persons and youth.
The group has been invited to perform at the World Hip-Hop Championships in Las Vegas in August, 2013. However, as they are all pensioners and none of them have been professionals in their working lives, they do not have the money to accept the invitation. The Crew members have an enormous amount of respect for Hip Hop culture and want to pay tribute to Hip Hop artists all over the globe by learning and performing Hip Hop dance moves. By entering the world of Hip Hop and demonstrating they have the upmost respect for what they do, they hope to build a stronger connection with young people.
The Hip Op-eration Crew members include a 96 year old in a wheelchair, six people who use other types of mobility aids including zimmerframes and walking sticks, ten members in their late 80s and early 90s, many people who are deaf, and one member who is legally blind. The average age is 76 years old and there are eight men and 29 women in the Crew - including a mother (96 years old) and son and daughter in law (both 69 years old).
